http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/small-plane-lands-in-detroit-neighborhoodThe pilot was only 18 years old. He was pulling a banner ad before the fireworks show. He ran out of gas. People were hurt by the falling power lines. It was really windy here today. He was close to city airport. Sounds like he wasn't paying enough attention to his fuel. Pilot walked away, but I think he is in big trouble. Is 18 too young for this kind of flying?

1. Who knows why he had the engine out - it's easy to say "he ran out of gas" in a report, but there are many reasons for an engine out. Odd that they said they smelled fuel around the aircraft after saying he was out.
2. He's possibly in trouble. Depends on the cause of the engine out. And, ultimately, that's why one buys insurance.
3. Never mistake age for experience, or experience for age. He may be a high time pilot with a bunch of hours. It just depends on when he got his permit and how much he flys.

Crash landed in Detroit? First thing I'd think walking away from the wreckage is how I ended up in Mogadishu.

Surely there are more effective ways of advertising than flying a big banner around? It just seems to be an outdated method to me. It's unique and people actually look at it, so it's at least somewhat effective. It's kinda like those Geico air typers.

Heck, even at some sporting events I've been to I see a bunch of people with their heads buried in their smartphones and it's not just "young adults" either.

Whenever I see these planes flying, the engine always sounds strange to me. I know the the drag from the banner has a lot to do with how you fly, but not sure on the specifics. The engine sounds rich, and it looks like the flaps are down quite a bit. They almost seem like they are creeping into stall speed. Must be a cost/benefit thing as far as advertising. Hell, I can never make out what the banner says anyways.

Engine threw a rod? Bad day and a good landing! Detroit 4 News is still reporting 'out of gas'. They also said the 2011 crash was due to some sort of mechanical problem.
There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

So I'm wondering, did the crash improve the city?
POLITICS, WAR, ECONOMY, CONTROVERSY! and other heated discussions and debates in the PWEC sub-forum at the bottom of this forum main page. See you there!

No,but there will be a nice little spike in tourism when the NTSB guys come by to investigate the crash.
Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty. This is known as "bad luck.” -Robert Heinlein

No,but there will be a nice little spike in tourism when the NTSB guys come by to investigate the crash. They better watch their stuff. A few years back the Secret Service was in Detroit for an Obama visit, and one of their equipment trailers was stolen right out from underneath their noses. That was hysterical. But hey, Detroit is making a comeback. The local news stations around here have been saying so for over 50 years. So, any minute now...

I prefer Helen Slater. But she's good too. I'd do that.
