I've chosen realistic altitudes for my missions and yet bombing missions are conducted at about 6000 feet - is this historical? At such altitude precision is very poor and neither of the planes has managed to seriously damage the target. I am flying Sopwith Strutter in January 1917 for RNAS if that is important.

Ekaton;

Go to the official WOFF web site and then go to the "User Mods" section and look for the "Mark1-W Bomb site" mod by RAF_Louvert.
This bomb site will make bomb runs a cinch! Make sure you read the accompanying "ReadMe" file for instructions. This is a JSGME self installing mod so it makes it easy to remove later. It works on a number of aircraft but not all of them. It does work on the Strutter.

Hope that helps you.

Thanks for your help, however I like my flights to be as realistic is possible - is this historical to fly that high? I was under the impression that WW1 missions were carried out on lower altitudes - 3000 feet or so, where for reconnaissance missions you can see things clearly and for bombing ones it will be more accurate.

I'very not had chance to properly source this (at work, so this is mainly based on a quick Internet search).

Altitudes increased through the war as defensive provisions and engone powere competed.

In 1918 the DH4 and DH9 were bombing in German back areas between 15000 and 16500feet.
In 1917 the RNAS had Handley Paiges and Strutted were dropping bombs from 6000 to 7000ft. Drift sights were available from early on.

Bombing as far as I remember was generally between 2000-8000ft. Higher is safer of course and it would also depend on cloud cover level.
Under 2000 ft MG ground fire increases, above it flak would.

Ekaton, the RNAS began using early versions of the Mark 1 bombsight by early-mid 1915, and the RFC shortly thereafter. The DH4 and other planes were bombing at altitudes of 15,000' to 17,000' by 1917. Average level-flight bombing was in the 2,000' to 3,000' altitudes very early in the war but was quickly moved up to 6,000' and higher due to losses of the B/R buses from ground fire. Since the early bombsights had no reliable windage adjustments to speak of the pilots made their runs either directly into or away from the wind in efforts to increase accuracy. Overall, level-flight bombing in WWI was not terribly effective in terms of damage to the targets, but it did cause a fair amount of panic on the ground as well as effectively redirecting the enemy's money and resources into trying to combat it. Read "Biplanes and Bombsights" by George Williams for a fairly comprehensive study on the subject. Here is a link to a free online copy at Project Gutenberg:

Biplanes and Bombsights

Hope this helps.
