Was on facebook for while this evening and a cousin of mine messaged me that his sister had
committed suicide this afternoon. Details were still coming in. She was 49 and has 3 kids.
2 out of school and one in high school. She had fallen out with her fiance a year ago and
had slipped into depression from it. Then my Uncle calls me to tell me his daughter killed
herself. He was so, like no feelings at all about it. More numb then me I guess. Said he can`t
afford to do anything for her family.

One of those nights, going to need a stiff drink. Life is just to short.

Geez Jim. I'm so sorry man. You've been having a rough stretch for a while now. Your be in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm sorry too. Suicide is such a tragic event. There are so many questions and one does become numb. I had a similar experience a couple of years ago, luckily I found the person just in time but the emotions and confusion leads to a form of breakdown. I literally couldn't cope for a week or two.
If you need to, talk to a councillor, it really does help, believe me.

Sad fact, had not seen this cousin in 45 years. Talked with her on facebook all the time
up until about year ago she vanished. My uncle is in rough shape. My other cousin Jim just
contacted me about him. Never prepared for dealing with the loss of your own child let alone
knowing she took her own life. Just Surreal feeling of WHY, HOW, Where to go from here.
She is a step sister to my cousins. My uncle had been married 4 times.

Terrible news indeed, Jim.

I hope somebody is giving that high school aged child extra attention, as there may be a desperate need for that right now.

I was just...stunned. I knew he had a drinking problem (runs in our family) but I didn't know he had gone into depression. I see my uncle all the time, I never mention him, I never know what to say.

Sorry to hear that, I know how painful it can be, I had my bunk mate in Africa commit suicide.

Jim, that is terrible, and I can only pray support your way, no magic elixir, but a sorrowful heart.

Sad as it may be, I really don`t feel anything since I hardly ever knew her at all except
in my youth. We all went our own ways so long ago, but reconnected with the advent of Facebook.
It was with using it was able to find out more about the family I have all over the place.
Rarely see anyone. Job has us disconnected from most of our families.

Just sad I never really got to know her, or her kids. That is where that numb empty feeling
comes from.

The ones left behind will have a rough go of it... do what you can to help them through this. Doesnt have to be money, might just be being there, or being available to chat, or help them move to new a residence.

Long time ago I was at a funeral for a fellow soldier who killed himself. I never knew him, I just transfered there a day or two before the funeral. The ex-wife was a mess... sobbing uncontrollably. Totally understandable given what happened. She couldn't make it to the end of the ceremony, her friends ushered her out.

However, the deepest tragedy I learned after the ceremony: their 15 year old daughter was in her bedroom when he shot himself. He didn't know she was there. Obviously she was not at the funeral... I'm sure she was under a observation for days or more. I never knew her, or even met her, but even now I wonder decades later how she was after such a shocking and traumatic loss.

Sorry, I didn't mean to make this about me, or anything, I just wanted people to know that suicides hurt the people who love them.

If you know anyone who you suspect of having depression or having suicidal thoughts / ideation, do your best to help them out. Don't confront them in a way that might destabilize them. Use your eyes and ears and gather info. People who commit suicide rarely do it without giving some kind of sign or call for help before they do it.

I've been there, I have relatives I know of but barely know. Most live a thousand miles away or more. You feel guilty when you hear they've gone because you feel like you should have known them better, because they're related to you.

Realistically it's just not possible unless you have a very small family or all live in a small area.
