I logged some time on the F/A-18D sim at MCAS El Toro as an O-1 before I went to flight school. That was pretty cool, but the biggest shock was that it didn't turn on a dime like the Hornet in Falcon 3.0.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ret. Navy Capt Kenneth Reightler. Two-time nasa shuttle pilot.
I asked him what was his most thrilling experience. He quickly mentioned carrier traps with the Superbug.

Somebody needs to get a sim out with carrier operations soon.

Is this a different project from the one in the works a while back? Can't imagine it will be a full study sim, but I'd be happy with something like the F-15C. Best of luck with it if you plan on releasing it in some form.

anyone can buy P3D - the label "academic" means nothing other than that LM has to use it to sell to you and me and everyone else.

if you are a professional, or plan to use it for educational or training purposes, there is a different version for you, much more expensive.

go buy P3D ! smile

My understanding is that's to pay for the upkeep required to ensure the VRS Bug stays compatible with the latest P3D versions. Unlike FSX, P3D is a "living" platform with constant updates. This is different than updating the product as bugs are discovered.

Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me if a couple years down the line we see the same thing with DCS. At some point devs are going to get sick of doing pro-bono work to keep their products up to date with the 4,893* different versions of DCS that are live at any one moment. They'll either charge for it, or tell you not to upgrade. ED did sort of the same thing Black Shark 2.

On record, I'm not against the practice. If it's a reasonable fee, and the updates are also ensuring that the product evolves with the platform changes, then I'm happy to pay for an updated product.

What I'm not cool with paying for, is for a dev to fix problems inherent to their product. If it's a problem with the module itself, that should be under the implied warranty of functional software.

And you know what? I wish I could drop $100 on a VRS grade Super bug in DCS. I'd do it in a heart beat. I'd get great entertainment return on my dollar when one amortizes all the hours I'd get out of that product.

*OK, a slight exaggeration smile , but come on ED, having an Alpha, a Beta, and a production version of the sim all live is a bit much.

You mean the academic version is "the version" every "gamer" should buy? I was also under the impression the whole triangle of licenses is to make people head hurt and stop bothering to buy anything else than the most expensive version. (sorry Lockheed people... not entirely my fail).

Do they also have sales?

no sales - ever

but constant updates and patches and every 2 years or so a new version, I have P3D since 1.4 and it was always a good buy even when there were some major bugs.

Thanks for info.

P.S.

Sorry, another off topic question, there is no subforum here for P3D, right?

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't complaining about the annual subscription. Skate was comparing prices of VRSs products and DCS products. I was pointing out that he had missed one. It's a quality product and I am happy to pay the small sum for its upkeep. It works, it's fun to fly and tacpack has added a great deal to a great looking sim. It's unfortunate that DCS has so few reliable 3rd party developers and that established sim developers are staying away from DCS. Why is that? The platform has some real potential.

DCS Kickstarter
Wags July 2014 "In this July 2014 update, the primary news is in regards to the restructured backer rewards. After a careful review of the older system under RRG, we found it financially unattainable."
Wags October 2017 "the investment vs. generated revenue has been excellent for the World War II aircraft. In fact, the P-51D Mustang has twice the cost effectiveness of the A-10C Warthog."
