Wow one pilot I have after about 85 missions has advanced to the Sopwith Triplane.

First time ever for me flying this plane.
And wow what a plane, superb climb, no wing shedding in dives, can take a lot of damage and is fast.
This is the latest victim a Roland CII

If it only had two guns....

And it looks fabulous.

Great pictures Stache. Indeed the Tripe is a beauty - I really enjoyed making the triplane and if I ever get a spare £ million I'll get a real one wink

Those are two gorgeous screen shots, Stache! thumbsup

I just love the Tripehound also. Its one of my few "I'm almost invincible" aircraft in the game. I like to stay in them right up to the point they are pulled from service.

Great job, Pol! salute

Startin' to feel that way. Earlier I dove, by myself, into a flight of six EIII's. Something I would never have considered in any plane I've flown yet. Got two of them before the rest scattered. Took a few hits but she held up great.

Yes I was curious so I took one up in QC. I did manage to rip a wing off, but I had to work pretty hard to do it.

Beautiful pics Stache. I loved the Tripehound back in the OFF:Between Heaven & Hell days. Switched to the Pup when WOFF came out. There's been a few Flight Model changes since though. Probably I need to give her another go. Always loved the marvelous view in the tripe. Easy to keep good situational awareness. Only the one gun, but with her that's all you really need as I see you have already found out. biggrin

How did it ever come to be called "Tripehound"?

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But in practice, there is.

I guess they gave it a "dirty name" cause it was so deadly effective.
The craft is of course not like a dog that gets fed only on tripe -
rather the opposite; it was expensive to make, built with good materials;
the "upper class fighter" for the RNAS boys.
But it is a word game - tripe must be short for triplane here, and the
"dirty name" may have made the pilots feel more grim against the enemy.
Like the "raging cannibal" face Rumey had painted on his Albatros.

The face on Rumey's Albatros, with the unknown-colored checkers (recent photographs have shown the long-thought gray/green is incorrect), was known as a "Negergeschicht," at least according to Mai. In Merrill's Jagdstaffel 5 Volume One, this is translated as "Negro's face." Is this translation accurate, Olham?

I don't think it is denigatory because it has nothing whatever to do with animal entrails. Personally, I don't like tripe having tried 'Trippa Fiorentina' in a very good Italian restaurant once and I couldn't swallow it. nope The other meanings in the post above mean nothing to me - maybe they are American usage.

I question whether the "ugly" connotation of tripehound was in common British use in 1916/7.

Likely the machine was seen as essentially a three-winged Pup, and the nickname came about because a hound is a hunting dog (pup) and the word hound was commonly used in compound words describing various specialized hunting breeds: foxhound, deerhound, boarhound, etc.

Yes, the translation is - the German word must be "Negergesicht".

In those days, a 'negro' was a very uncommon sight for a German.
Black people were imagined as "savages" in Africa (one did not think of the black people in America).
From Papua-New Guinea they had heard reports, that there were cannibals in the jungle.
There were drawn missionary jokes showing white people in big kettles on fires.
So, the face of a black man in a rage was something double frightening, I suppose.

EDIT: From the late 19th century until WW1, the nations with colonies presented "human zoos"
to show "the lifestyles and ways of foreign cultures" - with living people from their colonies.

WIKIPEDIA - Human Zoos

Good question. And a fine lot of responses to my query. Sifting the replies, I'd tend toward "Tripe" being a humorous or flippant rendering of "triple" or "triplane", and 'hound' added for its hunting ability.

It would be interesting to know if the term was current during the war years or if it was invented by writers later.

I think you are right, Hauksbee - here is the book SLANG about it:

The Sopwith Triplane is the best airplane in the inventory, IMHO. I really need to finish the Mike Booth 1/4 scale plans RC version I started years ago! All the wing s are built.

What is the source of that, Olham? Or, rather, what is their source? I mean, how does a plane behave like a "b_itch"? Refuse to have sex with you and then key your car? biggrin I don't buy it. All anecdotes I've seen or at least can remember describe the plane was an absolute joy to fly. To quote Cecil Lewis: "Being from the Sopwith stable, all the controls were nicely balanced and the machine handled like a polo pony. The Tripe vies with the Pup for pride of place in my heart for sheer flying pleasure." He goes on and on about how awesome an airplane it was.

"B_itch" implies something negative, but I don't see that. I've never found a source but "hound" to me was just an unofficial "dog term," similar to "pup."

There is a Double-Gun-Version of the Tripe. It is more steady and you need more Swing in the Curves. Personally, I think it is the better Version... but I also like the Fokker E4 LOL
Anyway, you should give it a go...

I had interpreted it so, that the tripe was behaving like a b*tch on it's enemy.
Luring the Germans to have a "quicky", stealing THEIR car keys and purse - like that!

The source was a book called SLANG! - but I know nothing about it to be honest;
found it on the web.

Is it possible that the term #%&*$# in this case has the meaning of a woman with difficult and moody character, who does not easily let someone get close? AFAIK one of the reasons why the tripe was not longer used (despite contractual politics), although being a great aircraft, is that maintenance was so difficult. Lot of effort and work and time needed to get to certain parts for maintenance and replacements etc. If that is true, then it would make sense.

I don't know. Could be! If so, for me, saying "hound" wouldn't even come close to being as satisfying as saying "b_itch." And maintenance problems? That's the mechanics' worry. If so, a derogatory word regarding maintenance difficulties may not even be used by aircrew.

BUT. I've no idea; I don't study the Tripe. All this is speculation is fun but overthinking. If I ever come across anything fact-based and concrete I'll definitely post it here. Unless someone else does first, and then I'll learn it here!
