Wow one pilot I have after about 85 missions has advanced to the Sopwith Triplane. First time ever for me flying this plane. And wow what a plane, superb climb, no wing shedding in dives, can take a lot of damage and is fast. This is the latest victim a Roland CII If it only had two guns.... And it looks fabulous.

If it only had two guns... ...he would have lost performance. Nice "Roland in flames" screen.

Those are two gorgeous screen shots, Stache! I just love the Tripehound also. Its one of my few "I'm almost invincible" aircraft in the game. I like to stay in them right up to the point they are pulled from service. Great job, Pol!

Hmm. I ripped the wings off the very first time I ever got it with a pilot...do be careful!

Startin' to feel that way. Earlier I dove, by myself, into a flight of six EIII's. Something I would never have considered in any plane I've flown yet. Got two of them before the rest scattered. Took a few hits but she held up great. Hmm. I ripped the wings off the very first time I ever got it with a pilot...do be careful! Yes I was curious so I took one up in QC. I did manage to rip a wing off, but I had to work pretty hard to do it.

I guess they gave it a "dirty name" cause it was so deadly effective. The craft is of course not like a dog that gets fed only on tripe - rather the opposite; it was expensive to make, built with good materials; the "upper class fighter" for the RNAS boys. But it is a word game - tripe must be short for triplane here, and the "dirty name" may have made the pilots feel more grim against the enemy. Like the "raging cannibal" face Rumey had painted on his Albatros.

I don't think it is denigatory because it has nothing whatever to do with animal entrails. Personally, I don't like tripe having tried 'Trippa Fiorentina' in a very good Italian restaurant once and I couldn't swallow it. The other meanings in the post above mean nothing to me - maybe they are American usage.

The face on Rumey's Albatros ... was known as a "Negergeschicht," at least according to Mai. ...this is translated as "Negro's face." Is this translation accurate, Olham?
Yes, the translation is - the German word must be "Negergesicht". In those days, a 'negro' was a very uncommon sight for a German. Black people were imagined as "savages" in Africa (one did not think of the black people in America). From Papua-New Guinea they had heard reports, that there were cannibals in the jungle. There were drawn missionary jokes showing white people in big kettles on fires. So, the face of a black man in a rage was something double frightening, I suppose. EDIT: From the late 19th century until WW1, the nations with colonies presented "human zoos" to show "the lifestyles and ways of foreign cultures" - with living people from their colonies. Great pictures Stache. Indeed the Tripe is a beauty - I really enjoyed making the triplane and if I ever get a spare £ million I'll get a real one Nice job, Pol! You are very skilled H

I question whether the "ugly" connotation of tripehound was in common British use in 1916/7. Good question. And a fine lot of responses to my query. Sifting the replies, I'd tend toward "Tripe" being a humorous or flippant rendering of "triple" or "triplane", and 'hound' added for its hunting ability. It would be interesting to know if the term was current during the war years or if it was invented by writers later.
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But in practice, there is.
