Started last Saturday after getting done mowing and taking a shower. Get ready eat supper and was not feeling well. Been having tooth ache for some time and gave no thoughts. Overnight things started getting worse a fever and then sharp pains in jaw. Turned out I had an Abscess tooth and it was seriously infected. Had to till Monday for a dental office, and then only wait even longer till Tuesday. They take and X-Ray and and look at me say they can`t help and give me referral to an oral surgeon in Mankato. They gave me an Antibiotic and pain killer prescription and sent me on my way. After 3 days of no eating or sleeping. At least I had something to make me sleep now. Get home call in my referral and get Friday AM appointment. Wake up Wednesday morning and the entire side of my face had blown out. Looked like I had gain 40lbs on one side. Even stretching my mouth half way. Cheek ballooned out like a baseball. Went into the Emergency explaining my problem and if they could help. Google told me horror stories about leaving an infection get this bad. I was less then a week away from being dead if it spread into my spine and lungs.
Spent 7 hours there with the ER in Contact with my oral surgeon. They worked out a an injection IV plan plan to get the swelling down so I could get it pulled. Pumped me full of Antibiotics, steriods, and 3 other types. Felt pretty good after. Then the held me up and sent me down to get my blood pressure under control. Was 185 over 93 in the ER. Wonder why. So they have me taking 2 types BP Meds now. Swelling dropped by half by time I left to go get prescriptions filled. Face felt weird all stretched out.
Get up the the morning after a stormy night, rough sleeping, woke up every 1 hour in bucket of sweat. All drugs making my body fight the infection. Get to oral surgeon this morning and took forever to get in and get it done. During consult he points out me and the wife how far the infection had spread and if the ER would have not done what they did the night before, he would visiting with me in an ICU today.
He knocked me out and pulled the infected tooth, was suppose install a drain for the infection put never did. Now wants me back friday the 3rd to put it in. Then what, we leave on vacation on the 7th to the 17th. Whats this drain suppose to do and how to get out. How do I eat with it. Will be making some calls tomorrow to find out if its worth doing it now or waiting to get back. Was like ER after getting Oral surgeon day upgrade. ER wanted to leave the IV plug in worst for the surgeons. Like hell could where one of overnight at home and go through the shower. Pull it.
What really sucks now that its out, I am hungrier then hell with no way eat what I really want, Gotta drink my food for a coupe a days. And those 875mg penicillin tablets are really tough. What ever you eat, stay close to the toilet. You will need it. Run though ya like water. The Codone pain tabs reverse this, But I really don`t like to use them. Only used one two some sleep my worst night.

If you are getting heavy antibiotics, make sure you take some probiotics. Your guts need the right bacteria and enzymes to process your food. Yogurt might be a good hing for you. Easy to eat and has good bacteria. But I would recommend you discuss probiotics and yogurt with a physician. My lay mans thoughts may not be appropriate for the regimen they have you on.
Wishing the best for you. Sorry you are having to go through this.

Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.

Sorry to hear about your issues, hope you are getting better. I would also recommend taking a rain check on the "vacation." Get better first.

In my profession,or not so much, A vacation is what the doctor ordered, the job is killing me more. When you live at work you can`t escape the everyday drama and feel responsible for taking care of it all. because I do. I am the only one working here with 2 buildings 51 units in 1 37 in mine. 5 acres of lawn to mow, 4 miles of trimming. Halls to vacuum, light bulb changing every day, and a million other jobs that would take up 50 more pages. No, have already paid for to, not an option to skip out on a non-refundable vacation. Just as much a chance of dying at home waiting. Then going and feeling good again.

Jim I'm sorry to hear of your trouble, I wish you all the best in getting better soon. Regarding the vacation... Where you would be going... Is it the kind of place that would have quality medical help, in case you *did* need it while there? Maybe consider some recon to determine what kind of dentistry and ER options are in the immediate area. Take care, Sir!

We rented a house in Munising Michigan on Lake Superior. Most beautiful region on the UP north shore. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. If I were todie anywhere. This would be it. On my own terms. Not my crappy job.
Yes, they have good medical care there and in Marquette.
Besides, I am already 3/4 cured. infected tooth pulled and infection down by 2/3`s. I keep taking the antibiotics and vacation will go fine. Just need to time my locations near a toilet.

Ouch!
Glad to hear the tooth is out and you're on the mend.
Damned stitches in your mouth are an annoyance, though, aren't they?

I agree about getting some info in advance, maybe get records sent ahead took a dentist, just in case.

It came and went, keep having use a toothpick near the tooth that already had filling but a new cavity formed under and behind it hiding the source and inflaming pain when food was not stuck in it. No need to send ahead any paper work. Have a mountain of it to take along that was giving all this week. And a pile of prescriptions and their paperwork.

that sucks Jim, but glad it is mostly in the past now. Have a great vacation. I know what you mean about work becoming too entwined with your life. several of my customers feel free to drop in if they think they have not seen enough of me recently, but they really do mean well... Munising is a great place to rest up and recoop.

Tough week indeed, glad to read it's getting better now. Hope you can still enjoy the vacation!

Just talked it over withe surgeon, he said when they extracted the infected tooth a great amount of infection fluid drained out and was sucked up. Therefore putting in a drain was not necessary. As for next weeks appointment. He was fine with canceling it as long as I keep taking the 875mg penicillin tabs and keep on track with the aftercare sheet. To call him if I have problems. He said that tooth was like a plug holding back the fluid and the dental assistant had to work the suction fast. So now worries about vacation. Now its back to work. 4 days sick really put me behind and then to start planing to get packed. Thank you all for caring. You guys are great.

Yep, the older we get, the more important it is to have taken care of your teeth. If it all goes bad, and you have tens of thousands, you can get implants. That's about the only viable option. No false teeth yet for me....but I see no option in the future. I have too many crowns and fillings. My dental bills are way too high, just for maintenance.... Lost my dental insurance with my pension cuts. No medical. Very painful, all around. Yep, the trick is....don't wait. Get it fixed ASAP....or else. Good luck Jim.

Just got back from taking my 96 year young mother to the dentist for an abscessed tooth. She had it opened to drain and goes back in 2 weeks to finish the job.
Like you Jim, the pills are keeping her near the throne room.
There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.
