Basic question: As I close on a potential kill, my plane never seems to have the stability that I see in so many player videos. I always have slight wobbling and bobbing. Any idea why, or what I'm doing wrong?

Is your stick or rudders spiking?

Basically there are two sources for what's going on:

Your controls (spiking, stiction, other undesireable things)
You.

We can try to eliminate the controls being the issue - or if they are, that might be a good thing.

If they're not, you need to look at what's going on in terms of your control inputs vs. what others are doing.

Thanks GG. Not sure what you mean by spiking. I'm worried that I have too much or too little sensitivity to my stick settings. All I know is that I am NEVER as elegant or smooth in my kill approach as what I'm seeing in player videos.

Spiking occurs when your controls use pots that are dirty or otherwise cause un-commanded input.

Basically you can hold a control steady and the input from it can randomly 'spike' up or down, even though you haven't moved it.

As for a dogfight approach, I just had a great one today, and then I botched it by kicking too much rudder. 20mm everywhere! smile It happens to everyone, so you need to do some analysis and see what's happening.

Can't really help you much without a very accurate description, or better yet, a video, other than to suggest things for you check out.

So, start with your controllers and see if they're causing you some trouble smile

If the sim you are playing allows you to, or your joystick software allows, change the default control curves..most default settings are linear or flat rate, so if you ad curves with less rate as it gets closer to center that my help in holder the pipper a bit more steadily when making fine corrections..instead of constantly overcorrecting...

The right or wrong joystick can make or break you.

Certain joysticks don't have enough physical travel compared to how they move the controls in game.

This results in huge control surface deflections when you're barely moving the stick at all.

I have this problem with my MS Sidewinder Pro 2 USB sticks (Have two, and I've seen this problem on multiple pc's throughout the years..)

As mentioned the only ways to fix it are through curves, decreasing overall sensitivity (if the game allows you to) or using the controller's software.

It is possible the potentiometers are dirty and need cleaning with potentiometer cleaning, but this is generally easy to recognize - the controller will be digitally scratchy/noisy in nearly any position including just while checking the devices manager in windows. If the problem is ONLY in game, then it's a controller sensitivity issue you need to deal with in game.

I would suggest that before you starting playing around with the joystick curves or controls, try flying alone and see if you can hold a steady course. Tyr some manoeuvers on clouds or ground targets, don't actually shoot. just see if you can keep a target in your crosshairs.

If you can achieve that, but can't maintain steady control when shooting.......then possibly the problem lies with your technique. In your excitement to claim a kill you may be gripping the joystick too hard, over-controlling or jerking the trigger.

They are often the common mistakes. smile
