Quote:
Just a few hours after EgyptAirs A320 with 66 people aboard crashed in the Mediterranean on Thursday, another aircraft narrowly avoided a fatal disaster over Greece.

Delta Air Lines aircraft 767-400, on a charter flight (DL-8957) from Frankfurt Hahn to Kuwait, entered the Athens Flight Information Region(FIR) from southeastern Tirana (Albania) at 7.10pm local time on Thursday without identifying itself and pilots did not respond to repeated calls by controllers from Italy and Greece for at least an hour, an official said on Sunday, confirming Greek media reports.Because of terrorist attack or hijack fears, the incident was immediately escalated by the Greek Civil Aviation authorities to the Ministry of Defense.

Following military protocol, at 7.49pm two F-16 fighter jets intercepted the Delta plane while it was flying near the Aegean island of Santorini. F-16 pilots attempted to make visual contact with the passenger jet pilots but reported to the ground their being in normal sitting position but possibly asleep. One of the F16s flew in front of the passenger plane and with light signals attempted to alert the pilots while the other flying next to the passenger cabin.

After passengers reported the presence of a military jet to flight attendants, the latter knocked on the cockpit door to wake up pilots. Pilots then contacted Greek authorities at 7.55pm and exited the Athens FIR at 8.10pm. Due to its consistent cruising during the no-contact time, the plane is said to be on auto pilot.

Someone needs to do a review on how many resting hours are pilots getting between flights.

Looks like two pilots are out of a job or at least they should be.

With today's hopelessly over-extended flight time regulations, it's a wonder this doesn't happen more often.

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

this must happen a lot, the pilots bring the craft up into the sky, set her on auto pilot and have 3,4,5 or more hours to burn.

Once the plaine is in level controlled flight and the auto pilot is in control what are the rules regarding pilot conduct?

I think its fine for one pilot to sleep if he requires it but obviously not two.

gentle hum of engines is a great lullaby to put you to sleep imo.

It's always disconcerting to wake up after a refreshing nap and discover the other guy was asleep also. Or so I've heard. duck

Why am I thinking of the movie "Airplane" when the stewardess asks the passengers if anyone onboard knows how to fly a plane? biggrin

Easy solution: just replace the pilot seats with seats from economy class.

So, is it only alleged that the pilots were asleep?

The article would seem to indicate that the aircraft was moving across a radio transition region, I wonder if something else was in play here, so far as the lack of communication and thus presumption of sleep.

Have to wait for some other sources or statements from parties involved to be reported.

Friend of mine is a retired AA Captain.

He used to fly the USA to Europe and USA to Japan routes.

He says on those long flights, the Captain and Co-Pilot [or sometimes more than one Co-Pilot] will take turn sleeping in the crew resting area which has 2 cots for the crew and stewardesses to take a nap in.

He added that back in those days, of course some pilots wll get frisky with the stewardess in that area too.

Yup.

He retired from AA (American Airlines for those who don't know or are not familiar with U.S. Airlines Acronyms) when AA was a company that still took care of you once you retire from them after many years of service.

His retirement package was probably in the 7 digit.

He tells me how he still own apartments in Los Angeles and New York and several cities in Europe from when he was still flying and he used those places as love pads.

He also owns a couple of dozen apartment complexes in the DFW area that he is landlord of.

He is close to almost 90 now.

Flight Attendants, since the mid 70's. Call them a Stew, Stewardess, or Steward and stand back. You'd be better off calling them "Aisle Donkey."

I was calling them stewardess as late as early/mid 90's.

Didn't hear anyone referred to them as Flight Attendants until the mid 90's.

Back from about 1984 to 1997 I traveled every week for business and sometimes went to 2-3 cities each week and I have always called them stewardess.
