A friend of mine went over to Windows 10, and he found it okay. I will do it until summer, as long as it is free - if he finds no drawbacks in the next weeks.

If you go the Windows update webpage and hide a particular update (use right mouse button to hide), then at some later date it Will unhide itself and come back to the site all by itself. It will NOT stay hidden forever. I remove all the updates below from all my Windows systems. ----------------------- KB3035583 and KB2976978 (these ready your windows 8 computer for upgrading OS to windows 10. KB3035583, KB2952664, and KB3021917 (ditto for windows 7 computer) http://betanews.com/2015/09/11/remove-un...nd-windows-8-x/------------------- This update below may seriously harm games that do now or did in the past require a disc in drive to play the game. For instance it causes very serious problems in my Microsoft FSX. I remove this update and problems go away. Anyone with WOFF problems should try deleting this update (because Combat Flight Sim 3 required disc in drive to play). I have been using Win 10 for quite a while now and prefer it to 7. I just built a new computer last weekend and installed Win 8 pro on it, that system was terrible and updated to Win 10 the day after I got the system working. The Win 10 free upgrade will not be available after July 26.

We have untill the end of July to get Win 10 "free". I like my Win 7 home pro with my rig, but wonder if going for the free deal of Win 10 is a smart move or not.
Most of you "old hands" know that I am not a GURU with computers and at 79 get frustrated quickly. Given perfect instructions ( no but first stuff ) I can do it.
Right now I have a load of Win downloads stored but not installed.
At little advice please!
Thanks in advance for you thoughtfull input.

I made the change to Windows 10 some days ago, and it went quite quick, easy, and works smooth as silk so far. Now you can get it for free - so why not take the plunge now?

We have two PC's we converted to Win 10. One (Win 8.1) went extremely smooth, the second (Win 7 Pro) took five tries before it worked correctly. A third PC (Win 7 Pro) we tried several times, but never did work correctly on Win 10, so we reverted back to Win 7 Pro and all problems are gone again.

What is the web site that was mentioned here (some place) that protects a computer from being taken over by Win 10?
Thanks in advance for your prompt and accurate information.

GWX Control Panel is the one I use. http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/ Though I will most likely be updating my non-WOFF systems to Windows 10 in July. My WOFF system is already on Win10

Never 10 by Steve Gibson is also good for stopping Windows 10: https://www.grc.com/never10.htmMuch simpler to use than GWX, but less options. Also it does not install. Just run the exe. RedToo.

I would also vouch for Steve Gibson's approach. He is a verified and well known security expert and I've followed his podcasts and shows for years. Been a longtime user of his Shields Up! program. That said, my new Dell came with Windows 10 64bit and I am incredibly impressed with it. Yes, you have to tick a few boxes if you don't want your system feeding Microsoft live telemetry, but it's an incredibly stable OS, runs all of my programs well, and makes updating and keeping my rig safe a pretty simple process. Now excuse me while I find a piece of wood to knock on!

I guess sooner or later there will be no way around Windows 10,I just want to decide myself when I want to upgrade. I have no doubt Win10 has it's advantages, but I rather want to pay for it. I don't trust anything thats for "free". I doubt it will be any more stable the moment they start charging for it. It's "free" because they need to consolidate their PC Operating System base into a single platform. I'm sure at some point we will be paying for "updates" or some such thing. Just like Office 365 is basically Office as a service, I suspect Windows 10 will eventually follow some similar route.

Just don't forget the freeware programs that turn off or uninstall the "consumer helper" tracking programs. They work real easy. One-click. Is there a particular one that you recommend?

Subscription eh PR? That was one of the possible MS endgames mentioned months ago at some tech forum. For whatever reason I think (or maybe hope) that the outcry would be so large and dramatic that something about the MS monopoly will finally be done. If there was a FUNCTIONAL alternative I would drop them like a live grenade. As for me I would gladly pay top dollar for a viable Windows alternative just to go down screaming.
EDIT: Sorry I was so busy on my soapbox I forgot to answer sir! I use DWS (Destroy Windows Spying) which is an easy one-click solution with plenty of options. Freeware at about 450kb in size.

I don't pay for anything and haven't since I started using BG's merry men stuff with Dos 1. And as for M$ 'support' you can forget it.

@ HellshadeAgreed. It will become a revenue stream for them just like we pay for cable TV only to be subject to 5 minute long commercial breaks and perhaps 35-40minutes per hour of actual programming... And it's "free" because most people won't turn off the tracking, etc, and they'll have access to a treasure trove of data to sell. But I'm prepping to do it, because with work, and stuff it's inevitable. Like Duke said, if there was any other way... But anyway, I bought a 960 GB SanDisk Ultra II today and am trying to figure out how to go about it. My 240 GB SSD was so small that I put all my user accounts (app data and all) on my spinning drive, I'm hoping I don't get headaches from that. It was tough, it was 4-1/2 years ago, and I forget how I did it!

Well, I upgraded to Win 10 today and then had to revert to Win 7. The Windows installation seemed to work fine but Nvidia wasn't happy. I couldn't get Nvidia's control panel to open so I tried to update the drivers. Every attempt failed - using GeForce Experience, going directly to Nvidia's website, using Driver Easy, installing express or clean - they all failed.
I'm happy with Win 7 anyway so I'll just wait until I start over with a new unit. The weirdness continues.......... I reverted to Win 7 and everything seems to be normal. A new Nvidia driver came out today so I used GeForce Experience to download it. This time I chose custom installation and entered a check mark for "clean installation" . It did install the new driver but it didn't do a clean installation. None of my settings were changed and the control panel still shows the CFS3 profile. Weird, but at least its not a problem (since I'm back on Win 7).
