Puter still messed up and running on onboard video so flight sims are out for now. Anything physical except short walks are still out for now and I have to really limit my sun exposure.
So I bought myself some cheapo watercolors and paper this past January and said "Let's try painting!" I had tried oil painting when I was in my early teens, not for long and I wasn't real good or patient at it.
Well time is one thing I have now, and watercolors are fairly inexpensive, gotta shop hard for paper though. I can't afford the good stuff.
Pretty happy with a few of them now that I have been watching some YouTube vids, although most end up as fire starter material. I paint mostly outside on my back porch. Found a cool shaded place down by the river, clear enough so hopefully nothing deadly can sneak up on me!
Here's my peaceful little spot:
Here's my first try at the nice cypress that shades me there:
Got in a hurry to finish the foreground and messed it and a couple of other things up. Damn deerflies found me and I forgot my bug juice. Big thing with watercolors is screw-ups in most cases are really hard to fix, like impossible in a lot of cases.
My best tree yet. Kinda hopin we have a painter or two here for some tips/constructive criticism. I think I have a little knack for. It will only be 4 months since I started tomorrow. Patience is something I never had, but seems like age and my little brush with death has changed that.
Thanks for lookin.

I'll be happy with 20 more years to learn to paint.
I'll say this about it for a hobby. Some days, especially if I am doing one that's coming out decent, it's sooooooooo relaxing.
edit: It's just a tiny painting, like 4.5 in x 6 inch. I use them for postcards to send to friends and family.

That's a very nice drawing Murphy. I can't even draw stick people! Zero artistic talent for me.

Nah Panzer, Murphy's the nice guy from MI, I am the old grouch from FL.
Haven't even attempted a distant suggestion of people yet....stick people would probably look good compared to my ability to draw people. I have my resident Cardinals, Hawks, Owls and Osprey's I will try to paint first....and my tree rats, aka squirrels.
Well I have tried an Osprey last month...not one of my best... Again just a small card that I sent as a Thank You to one of my cancer docs.
Thanks for the encouraging words from everyone. One of the most interesting things that has happened is that I know look at almost everything as a possible painting. I pull off the side of the road a lot to take pictures.

Much, much better than anything I could do. That is good.
I hope you stay at it.

Whoops. Sorry about that.
Anyway, very nice work!

No sir, you do not.
You have real talent, not just "a little knack" for it. Duly impressed in your first efforts!

Uh oh, isn't this how Hitler got started?
Seriously, your work looks great...really. I've dabbled and can't touch what you've shown here.

Nixer, channeling his Bob Ross, The Happy Painter. I like that picture and the way water colour plays with the canvas and light. It's a much different medium than oils.
I used to do oils a long time ago before I even knew who Ross was. Had no technique (I was that young) but I did enjoy the final product of oil to canvas. I painted horses. If I were to try painting today I think I'd end up doing WW2 aerial art.... BADLY.
Keep up the good work. It will be interesting to see your progress should you continue to share.

Drawing straight lines is easy if you have the right tools...
I can draw perfect geometric shapes all day long, with consistent linewidth and very nice lettering. But when it comes to real artistical work like painting organic scenes, I don't have that talent. The water reflection would have done me in (throws the whole mess into the water and finds something else to do).

Again, thanks for the kind words and encouragement. Hopefully in the future I can translate this hobby into something I can make a buck or two doing. I am thinking limited edition "greeting"/holiday cards. I am starting college in a few months and jokingly tell people I am majoring in digital basket weaving. I am really looking to learn enough about photography and printing to make my own cards in the event I get good enough painting that somebody would consider parting with some cash to buy them. Certainly not looking to get rich, just supplement my almost non-existent retirement income.
A lot of water under the bridge and paper in the fire before that can happen so I just keep on trying to improve and learn.
A couple different ones from last month and I'll quit spamming my amateurish wannabe art.

I guess I can just blame this one on cheap wine
Thanks again for the kind words. Bottom line, I am having fun and just maybe it will help me out in the future. Time to go stare at a blank piece of paper and see what pops into my mind...sometimes nothing so I just take a walk or ride, or surf the net for cool photos. Weather Underground has a GREAT selection of photos I get ideas from.
