For some reason I was deeply regressing to past memories of an 80s magazine I used to read as a kid called Gung-Ho. smile Anyone remember that magazine?

So I Googled it and found out that Gung-Ho was just an offshoot to the mother of all adventurer magazines called Soldier of Fortune ... and it still exists!

Lots of interesting info! ...

I used to have a load of these when I was a kid in the 80s'. Used to have some great data and cutaways on various weapon systems.

No wonder you guys are so whacked! screwy biggrin

Nah, growing up late-70's/early-80's, the only rags I was reading was my bother's hand-me-down "Hot Rod", "Stereo Review" and "Hi Fidelity", along with the occasional "Playboy" and "Penthouse". Later a friend would hook me up with a stash of "Club International".

Never heard of these combat/survivalist magazines except for "Soldier of Fortune", but I didn't have any.

++++++++++

Reminds me how cool magazines were back in the day. We had no computers, no consoles, no cell phones, no devices at all. As an early teen I had in my bedroom a small black & white TV with 4 stations that I didn't give a crap about, and a stereo with an ever growing music collection. After school or in summer the choices were to either get on my bicycle and ride around my neighborhood collecting enough kids to play ball in a field, or to sit in my room listening to music and reading rags.

I was cruising Telegraph for girls, and hunting deer.
Never spent a dime on a record or a magazine.
It all went for beer and gas.....lol....

I remember the rock and roll magazine Cream. Me and my brother always got that and Popular Science. I remember that short period were Rolling Stone actually was good too. These and the sports page were always good for the crapper.

Murph, beer and gas was probably real cheap then. I remember my older brother and his friends piling into his Roadrunner (forget what year it was). They always had some cheap beer. He loved Telegraph too. I think he was a little too young for the Gratiot days.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Combat and Survival eh? Looks like a good mag!

Bit of a strange coincidence that I decided to post about SOF now because last month's issue was the final printed issue after over 40 years! Theyve gone digital only as of this month ...

Here are the covers of the first and last issues ...

I think it was the cover of Soldier Of Fortune right after 9/11 that showed an animated picture of an eagle sharpening it's talons on a grinding wheel. Never been able to find that image again though.

Remember "Omni" magazine? I read that one as well as "Popular Science".

Omni, wasn't that a Carl Sagan project?

Been a Soldier of Fortune subscriber for years, Started getting the magazine in 1978 and they
had some great stories out Southern Africa, when Rhodesia fell. Many from Congo to and West
Africa. Today, I have an online subscription and the magazine has taken a serious drift to
stupid stories. Regretting keeping it. Popular Mechanics is my favorite.

The last print magazine I subscribed to was National Geographic but I cancelled it around 2006 or so.

I hated when "Cadalyst" and "Cadence" (AutoCAD/general CAD magazines) went digital about a decade or so ago, now they no longer exist at all. frown After letting "Road & Track" and "Motor Trend" expire (would buy "Automobile" from the bookstores), the only one I subscribe to today is "Car & Driver", and that's mainly because my father enjoys reading it.

However, I am becoming interested in the new Miata so I may re-subscribe to a second car rag. My 'midlife crisis' hasn't been the stereotypical negative experience you read about, but I am getting really tired of driving a Honda Element all the time.

How about with a file instead of with a grinding wheel...

I don't get digital magazines. Defeats the whole purpose of them when Google is right there in your face.

These United States of America
Yeah I don't like the idea of e-magazines. I like the physicality of them and being able to create an archive of them. I feel the same Peally. I usually don't like reading off the computer that much and if I need to, there it is, a PC with internet access and tools like Google waiting to be used.

I used to buy some military aviation magazines, PC Pilot and sometimes some other gaming magazines from about 2000 on for another ten or twelve years. Right now I get Game Informer through Gamestop but its nothing special.

I got American rifleman for awhile when I became an NRA member. As a kid though in the late 80s and early 90s, I did read some comic books but I've always had a struggle sitting and reading and the comic book layout always confused me and still does.

I'm wanting to subscribe to SkyWatch TV's new magazine coming out because they are specifically creating and printed version along side their electronic version for folks like us who like reading off paper and not a screen and something we can make a library out of.
