Like most people on here, I'm totally engrossed by everything WOFF has to offer. It's an incredible piece of work all round by OBD. I'm often experiencing interesting / different things, but in my last flight (leading a 2-man Halb DII patrol), I saw something very strange....

The date was July 3rd 1916. We were over the lines north of Bapaume when, during a routine check of my six I saw a spec some way behind us. Zooming in I was extremely taken aback to see that it was a tripe - three sets of planes, no doubt about it!. Sensing a total mismatch, we scarpered off to the nearest friendly balloon site to get some protection. The tripe came right on in, regardless, did a couple of sweeps around, but never actually engaged, taking off for the front again shortly after our balloon archie opened up.

We landed at Lechelle and radio'd in our sighting to an astonished HQ staff. A later check on local enemy squadrons showed no listing of Tripes anywhere in the vicinity. My understanding is that the RNAS didn't get these babies until at least 4 months later!

Has anyone else ever had a similar encounter?

Yes. I encountered them quite often the last time I was flying as a German two-seater pilot in North Flanders in the summer of 1916. My encounters and their descriptions can be found somewhere in the early pages of the massive DID campaign thread here.

Aviatik C.I vs. Sopwith Triplane! Fun times. I even managed to shoot down one of them (or my observer did). smile

As far as I know, in real life the British only had one Tripe for evalution purposes in France before December 1916. My guess is that some squadron in WOFF gets the Tripes too early, which makes it possible to encounter them in career mode several months before they were actually flying combat missions with them.

Thanks Hasse. I tried enlisting a new pilot and I can't get one to appear as a selection choice before 1917.

Since this sounds like a problem you should probably move this to the Technical help thread, probably has a better chance of a Dev seeing it there.

As far as I remember there were some prototypes around in July 1916. 1 in Naval Wing July 1916 and others soon after - so it's not a UFO at least.

Thanks Pol. Yet another example of wonderful realism from the OBD team, then. Love it!

I checked the datafiles, and the only days you should see it are the days Dallas had it in the air. If you see more than one in the air at a time, please let us know, and we will try to figure out a fix

Cheers,
shredward

We will remember them.
