Ice Cold in Alex or Eating in ...
Was delving through some old packing cases that had not been unpacked since we moved in 1972 and came across this old book from 1834 called Lakes of Scotland published by Joseph Swan of Glasgow.
It's got a little dampish and hopefully I have rescued it in time.
I have another similar book but with water colours - it is safe and secure and in good condition.

wow, what a find! There are some good ways to preserve these books, even with some water/moist damage. Moist can easily damage books - either directly or indirectly (breeding place for molds and insects) so they must be treated well.
At least it's from 1834 - paper quality was still good then.

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the universe is for it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more inexplicable.
There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

If I had known it was in the box I would not have put it in the cellar!

There were a few books there, that one was the earliest, others are dated 1860, 1895, 1899, 1905, 1911.

Even found a passenger list for 2nd Cabin Passengers on the RMS Campania sailing from New York to Liverpool Oct 21 1905 and my uncle and aunt are listed as passengers.

Edit: RMS Campania had quite an interesting history, at one time holding the Blue Ribbon for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic and then in WW 1 being eventually converted into n aircraft carrier.
The first ever purposely built sea plane for aircraft carrier use was named after this ship the, Fairey Campania

From the hills rebounding
Let this war cry sounding
Summon all at Cambria's call
The mighty force surrounding

Men of Harlech onto glory
This shall ever be your story
Keep these fighting words before ye
Welshmen never yield
