Greetings All,

I've had a lot of windshield time as of late which gives me a lot of time to just think, and sometimes I mull over ideas about WOFF. Yesterday afternoon, as I was returning home, I was pondering if there might not be a way to have a bridge in the WOFF landscape that would actually span a valley. Normally, with the CFS3 engine, you can only have bridges that are simply plopped onto the landscape with a ramp at each end. They don't actually go over a depression of any kind. Now, I know from past experience that even if you could sort out building a bridge across a valley or ravine or whatever, that if you were planning on fitting it to a rail line or road that the traffic on said rail line or road would not actually travel across the bridge but would continue to follow along on the ground below it - it's just the nature of the beast. None-the-less, even with that shortcoming, I think it would still be a nice little scenery item to sort out. So, this morning I went and dug out Pat Pattle's old Antheor Viaduct mod for CFS3 to use as a test for my idea. After not a lot of mucking about and some customizing to Pat's old facility file, I have actually achieved some measure of success.

Still some testing and tweaking to do, as well as some paint work, but so far I am liking it. Assuming I can get to a point where this all works well in the sim, is it something you folks would be interested in having?

Later.

Lou

I am having a Blue Max flashback.
The spans underneath are probably "solidl" and you cannot fly between them?
Or maybe not... Guess I am seeing the terrain through them?

whoohoo

Sounds very interesting!

Duke;

can the bridge be easily stretched to fit the gorge, and if so would it entail cut and paste in a graphics program, or by some other means ( I'm thinking of like compiling and creating an .xdp, .m3d, and .bdp?

I can't see from the screenshot whether it casts DX9 shadow (instead of simple stock cfs3 one), but just in case - DX9 adds new ground shadows for facility objects if their texture is in the "buildings" folder (one of its subfolder will work as well) or if you specifically add their texture name under [Scenery] in "shaders30\TextureMagic.ini"

AnKor, the textures for the bridge are in the folders in 'buildings', and the bridge does cast shadows. As to which shadows I am not sure, but they look quite nice so I am assuming they are the DX9 version.

Robert, it is nothing so easy as that. You must have all the parts placed just so in the facility file so that when you alter the elevations in the area where you are going to place the bridge, by means of the global layer file, you can get the surrounding landscape to line up fairly close to the ends of the bridge. The one I am showing in the screenshot is using not only the facility file for the bridge itself but three others that are manipulating the elevation of the terrain around the bridge. You should know by now that nothing is simple when it comes to working with the CFS3 engine. smile2

Duke, very much a Blue Max flashback. As to flying through the bridge arches, I don't believe you can even though you can see through them.

Thanks for the kudos and the encouragement folks, it is much appreciated. I had some time this morning before heading out to test a few more tweaks on the viaduct/bridge mod. The old CFS3 engine has some anomalies when you start adjusting elevations in the existing landscape and then place objects in that adjusted area. I knew about these before starting so I was prepared for the weirdness. The one that is the most noticeable, (apart from the train disappearing down into the bridge), is how the object will float around somewhat on the terrain. If you fly directly down the tracks towards the bridge it is aligned perfectly, but as you veer away in either direction the bridge will glide a bit and no longer appear aligned along the tracks. I can find no work-around for this, either now or when I attempted a similar project a number of years ago. Still, even with the oddities, the thing does look quite nice spanning the valley I've created in the landscape.

It would be wonderful if Pat Pattle still has his GMax files for this project. If he did I would see if he might be able to make a small tweak to the ramp area on the end walls as I've a hunch it would allow for a smoother transition into the WOFF landscape. As it is now I have a bit of a speed dip at each end of the bridge.

Later all, on the road again.

Greetings All, I am providing a quick update on this project before I leave for the day for a family party. Between work trips I have been able to make some wonderful progress with fitting the viaduct into the WOFF landscape, due in very large part to the help and expertise I am receiving from Clive, (aka Pat Pattle). He did indeed have his original models and has kindly been making the necessary tweaks to them. After he'd changed the shape of the end walls as per the outline I'd sent him the structure no longer 'floats' around in the landscape but now stays aligned perfectly all the time. Apparently it was the interference of the bridge ends into the landscape itself that was causing this anomaly. In addition, I've gone ahead and created a set of stone textures, after studying numerous photos of old French and German bridges and viaducts, and have swapped these out for Clive's original brick textures. Here is how things are looking as of this morning:

BONUS: Clive changed the damage boxes to his model so that you can now fly through the arches - is he a true prince or what!

Have a wonderful Sunday folks, I plan on doing so.

Cheers!

Lou

Gee, that is beautiful! Thank you, Clive (if you ever should read here)!
And thank you, Lou, for the time!
I often wonder if you know a secret how to get 27 hours out of a day - you are mostly on the road,
you have family, and then you still find the time for the flying; and then even for modding???
Maybe Winder and Pol told you the trick - they also seem to use 1 1/2 lives.

I wished someone would teach me trick, as I'd need a 30-hours-day - I spend so much time
with being tired or sleeping already. But then I guess it has something to do with
"get up early!"...

Good job!! It would be great to see enemies crash after trying to chase us through the arch! (Yep, too many Marvel comics lately smile ).
