You can stream the first 4 of 5 episodes online here about the 100 year history of Boeing:

http://theageofaerospace.com/discovery/home

Wow! I didn't know Boeing started United Airlines and that the B-17 almost didn't get made and Boeing almost went out of business after sinking every $ into the B-17 prototype which crashed and burn during its demo flight for the U.S. Army.

Imagine where would the USA and her allies be in World War II if the B-17 never did get mass produced.

The USA would still be in the same place.

I am watching episode 2.

They say in 1942 more Americans working in the war factories were killed than American troops killed anywhere by a factor of 20 to 1.

I didn't know about this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schweinfurt-Regensburg_mission

and this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kansas

This is a very in-depth and informative show and I am still on Episode 2.

Schweinfurt is one of the better known ww2 targets,I think.

The Men Who Killed The Luftwaffe is a good read. Also Bomber Boys for the British side of things.

Really? Do you believe half the stuff you post on SimHQ?

The B24 was more capable but it never gets the attention given to the B17.

And we built more B-24's than B-17's, or any other aircraft for that matter.

I think this is mostly due to the fact that the B24 was mostly used in Italy which was a theatre of war that was relegated to second priority after D-Day opened the Western Front.

And there are only 2 B-24s left flying. I think there are about a dozen B-17s but I would have to look that up to be sure.

I watched the first installment and found myself thinking, "This is the l-o-n-g-e-s-t commercial for Boeing that I've ever seen," throughout.

The B17 was sleeker. It almost looked like an overgrown fighter. The B-24 looked like a truck.

And then there were the names. While "Liberator" sounds noble, who wouldn't rather tell chicks at a bar, "I'm a (insert position here) on a 'Flying Fortress'?"

**edit**
...a truck with wings glued onto it.

Not just wings, but a Davis airfoil.

I have to admit I hadn't heard of the Davis airfoil before. Interesting stuff!

That apparently made them a b*%&$ to keep in formation.

I wonder what the height/weight limit was for the US Army Air Force during WWII? I've been inside a B-17 and everything looked extremely cramped. Heck, I think I would barely fit inside the cockpit of a P-47. biggrin
