Well. la-di-da, Captain Obvious!...

But seriously, a study found the cause is a decrease in competition appeal with age, which previously was though to be more related to male gender.

Also, they found that those gamers that favor strategic games vs. competitive games, can keep their gaming motivation going further with age.

From my personal experience, I tend to agree. Online gaming, leader boards and achievements have no appeal to me.

But give me a good single player challenge and I'm all into it.

I take my competitive edge out through other means by far. Games are for when I want to relax the brain, and therefor they're essential wink

I'm 43 and my interest in PC gaming overall is just as strong as it was when I was 18.

What has changed is my loss of interest with playing deathmatch-style online games. It's not because of my age but because I got tired of all the cheating/hacking/whining from the other players. When it comes to online I'm strictly a coop player.

I can definitely see a correlation though with increased age causing reduced interest in twitch deathmatch type gaming. Your reflexes inevitably start to degrade as you get older and that usually means that you simply won't do as well with those game modes.

Panzer I always think of you as being like 30. Quit being older than my projection of you is.

I kinda forced myself to step back and slow down from gaming... I would still love to do it as much as I did back when I worked for SimHQ, but to be honest, gaming was taking over too much of my time. Why I quit SimHQ and then backed away from most gaming.

I now prefer SP games with stories like the open world games, IE: The Witcher 3, Far Cry, or Fallout. Still play shooters, IE: R6 Siege is a great, fun game...but as I've grown older I hate the force on force competition, mostly because I suck, lol... my tactical play don't always beat a talented run and gunner, even thou it should IMO.

But I can agree with the "study".

I just can't stand the insufferable brats online who deal with mommy and daddy not coddling their precious egos enough by telling me over and over again the terrible things they've done to my long-deceased mother.

That, and this cartoon sums up most online play for me. Aside from playing with the fine folks here:

At 40 I get bored of shooters much more quickly than I did 10 years ago, buy my enthusiasm for flight sims (especially WWII) is strong as ever!

I don't think it's age so much as just getting old after a while. It's been like that my whole life, starting with Pong. My interest is still there, but rises and falls as I have other hobbies come and go too.
Like Magnum, I'm less interested in MP, but love co-op with friends. Rainbow Six Siege is much more fun as co-op than MP.
That might be more age related I suppose, but I'm sure there are younger people that feel the same, just as some others my age and older still like MP.

For me, it was working 12 hour shifts sitting in front of multiple computer screens that slowed my interest. When I got home, the last thing I wanted to do was sit back down in front of a PC.

I've always been more of a strategy/RPG/sim fan. I do like a decent shooter every now and then but I'm getting bored of them pretty quickly. I also prefer cooperative gameplay to competitive gameplay. The latter always seems to bring out the worst in people.

Yup. The amount of cursing and personal insults that I would see in the in-game chat log when I used to play deathmatch was pretty bad.

+1 working in software does curb the desire to hit the computer screens at home after work.

It goes in cycles for me. I'm in a bit of a rut as far as simming goes right now, but I suspect that will change when I get my Oculus Rift later this year. I enjoy playing some of the twitch shooters, but strictly single player.

At 53 my interest is as strong as it has always been, my drive and energy isn't so many times that a few years ago i would have spent gaming I now will instead sit on the couch and watch TV with my wife.

Working in front of multiple screens all day does slow me down.
Lack of time due to other priorities is the issue.
PVP is not an option, I want to play Coop with people I like.
I want to play some coop in RB6: Siege with my SimHQ buddies

My age is only a factor in that it just means I've been around long enough to have the utility gained from yet another FPS title reach 0. Nothing to do with other things that we think of when we say "getting older"

And to that point I think that's part of why strategy and simulation stay strong in the interest depart, simply because there are no where near the number to titles available compared to other genre's.

I am 1 month 11 days till I hit the brick wall of 40 to my face. But I have noticed less interest in FPS sorts of games. Now is this because I am simply hitting the middle of the road, or is because each damned FPS is pretty much like the last one for the past 15 years? Sure it gets prettier, but the game play? Its usually the same damned thing over and over. Why would I want to devote a huge amount of time when there is little of anything new?

So I am seeing a shift of what I play. More cerebral and less twitch. But most major game titles are aimed at the teen - early 20's crowd. They are not aimed at me. So they have less appeal. Its not I am loosing interest, its that often the games are simply not aimed in my general direction. But a full grown adult will generally have much less time to play, so there is that.

Lately I found myself playing things like Xcom2, Tropico 5, Kerbal Space Program, a bunch of Shadow Run games, and this funky Syndicate wars clone, Satellite Reign. I have lost all interest in Twitch shooters. And I was always pretty good at them, but as far as I am concerned COD 4 modern warfare murdered the FPS shooter. This had been the go too genre forever. Not so much now. And it is not lack of wanting too. Its game play that sucks as far as I am concerned. Last one I was really into was RO2 with some dabbling in Arma 3. Arma 3 could have kept my interest but did not care much for future thing and the damned game has gone insane in MP with worthless life and dayz clones. Even the tactical shooter bits in MP have gone insane with things like KTOH. Even RO2 went off with Rising Storm as the COD 4 effect took more hold. I really don't want to play 20 years of repackaged QUAKE damnit!

I have Unreal Tournament (Game of the Year Edition) from around 2003, I think. It actually runs on Windows 7. I used to be addicted to it. Online and off. For me, that and Medal of Honor were the salad days. I play UT once and a while just for kicks. One thing I find strange lately is I can get a little vertigo from playing a FPS game. I guess that my age showing too.

My kids have sucked up almost all of my gaming time. I've gravitated towards turn-based strategy games due to parenting demands. I'm just as interested in gaming as I used to be.
