Use this link: http://1drv.ms/1UdnVq9Download the "140Trial2016" (7-zip self installer) and run it. It creates a "140Trial" folder with everything in it. However, you must run the DSP140offline.exe first. Select one of the two exes, the DefaultEAW, and planeset1 like this: Then you can fly. The only other thing you may want to do is to replace the "eaw.ini" file with your own.

Well, that's as maybe, but I can't even run this exe. I'm getting can't run 1024x768 error, 72170/1 errors, and CTD to desktop from exe, missing d3d.dll? Got an ATI 1TB HD 5450 Driver Version 6.14.10.7279 on Win XP SP3 All I want to do is drop stuff in the root folder for testing. Not exactly hard to do in 1998! I've tried running older exe's like 1.28f, but all these installs were damaged 4 years back by a virus, and no longer run.

I had several 1.25e installs and loads of Tony's test exe's, all of which used to work, but now don't. I changed the graphics card a year or so ago, and EAW worked.
Then the Virus hit, and screwed a lot of things, forcing me to re install Windows, again.
I was on XP Pro, but I lost that disk, and I was forced to use a Win XP Home OS. Everything seems to work normally. I run Avast too, but I've not had any warnings running EAW, and no files deleted.
For some reason Plane00.dat, d3d.dll, are missing, even in the new install, I downloaded yesterday. Tried using an d3d.dll from another exe, which makes the game run, but CTD's at Fly.
I have no Plane00.dat anywhere on my 3 HD's!

John There are times when you stretch my patience to breaking point and this is one of them is it possible to make a 1.40 install
You asked for a 1.40 install, and the one I pointed to is the simplest one possible. No good to me, as it has all renamed textures and 3dz files, not to mention Dir sets, and other junk, of which I know nothing. What did you expect, a version of 1.40 which uses the old naming system when the 1.28c ....... 1.29 exes are still available? You are a member of the code group, but never kept up to date and seem to be blissfully unaware that we have been using the DirSet system 1.28c was released almost 10 years ago. Since then we have had 1.28d/e/f and 1.29 not to mention the slot free 1.30 and 1.40 systems. Have you ever considered the reduction in disk fragmentation that the DirSet system achieves, especially when multiskin BMP files came in? You consider this to be junk? You want to drop files in the root folder. Fine, but if they are aircraft model files with the old names they will not be used by the 1.40 exe. I know why you got the "Plane00.dat" error. There is no "Plane00.dat" file anywhere on any of my HDDs either. It is an error message which Ralf introduced to indicate that a "Plane.dat" file is missing and the value indicates the slot number. Your exe cannot find the "Plane.dat" file for Slot 0. It would not find one for slots 1 to 29 either because you never follow instructions. The picture in my first reply has the word "must" in it. My text in that post told you to select a planeset. That whole thing was done to avoid the very problem you encountered, but you still managed to stuff up. So what do you really want?

From what I understand that root install ability was changed after 1.28c?
It has never been changed. Files in the root folder are always used preferentially to those elsewhere. The only thing that cannot be done is to put aircraft skin or flight model files in the root folder of EAW140. A single "PlaneF.3DZ" intended for a 109E would be used by all 30 planes not just the 109E. Similarly a "Plane.flt" or a "Plane.dat" file intended for one plane would be used by all 30 planes.

OK Tony.
I don't want to play the game, simply want an install which runs the extra aircraft 3dz's, purely for testing models.
I should never have to ask for help to get EAW running, as I've happily run the game since 1999, but in recent years the complications of all these new file names, and changes have left me behind.
I don't have the time I once did, nor the mental strength to make sence of all the changes. All I would like to do is mess around with my models, and finish a few things off.
If I can't get a simple working install, like 1.2 was, I might as well call it a day, and say farewell for good.

Sorry. Because I own the folder when I tested that link I saw all the files. I had forgotten that when I created that link I had not shared the folder contents, just the previous file: This is a link to the 129 installer file: http://1drv.ms/1PSIIj7As I can see the files it is interesting to note that the 1.29 installer is 452 MB whereas the 1.40 installer is only 139 MB

AO, Col. Gibbon, Col., I too am using XP SP3. For some reason after extracting the zip, when I go into the folder, my D3D.dll file disappears. And sometimes, the DSP too. If I paste another one in there, all works fine and it never disappears again. I dont hear of this from anyone else so I am assuming it is an XP problem. (Or maybe my antivirus? Avast.)
AO
Yes its your Avast probably. I used to use Avast. That's what is removing files like .exe or .dlls. This goes for most Antivirus and Anti-malware; You'll have to lower your settings or config it allow exception for the program / .dlls.

Yep, I tested a clean install of 1.40, and checked there was a d3d.dll in the folder. Ran the exe and Avast scanned the EAW.exe and deleted the d3d.dll, whicj kinda explains why non of my new or old exe run! Hi AO. If you find a way to get Avast to ignore the d3d.dll, please let me know, as I can't find an ignore list, in the current version. I the older ones there was an option to do this, but the new one seems to be horribly automated! Hi Tony. Tried 5 times to download the second file set, but each time it fails.

Jell has been helping me in a PM get 2 XP boxes up and running. This should surfice as a final report to him and hopefully be of some help to anyone else trying to get EAW up and running. First a bit of advice to Vista, 7, and 8 OS owners. Do not install old games to the programs file folder. These operating systems try to guard this folder from modification by all users except the administrator. I know of an instance where the desktop was the administrator, but because the program was installed within the programs file folder the virtual store was still used and this caused all kinds of cusswords to get an old game running. There is nothing wrong with installing EAW to C:/EAW. The two systems: #1 Self built A7N8x based box that has always been a crash prone POS until recently when I swapped out the ram chips. This was one of 2 boxes I was using when I helped with the multiskins code. If I remember correctly it was XP SP1, 512 ram and GeForce4MX at that time. It may have been Win98 but I doubt that. XP SP3 1.8 Ghz single core AMD 1.5 Gigs Ram on-board sound and game port Gforce 6200 AGP8x video card. #2 Garbage picked Dell Dimension DIM3000. I know the original owner and the original OS disks are lost so I was unable to revert to original. I scrubbed all of there info and files from the system the best I could. I even had the oppertunity to learn that deleting burning software improperly can cause windows to not recognize any CD or DVD installed. Registry edit will fix that that issue if you learn what too look do. XP SP2 2.8 Ghz Pentium(r) 4 512 Megs ram (8 megs used by on board Video) PCI Sound Blaster Live (had this thing since x486 days. I wish they still overbuilt new tech), needed for game port On-board Intel(r) 82865g graphics (New owner of box will be adding PCI graphics card at a later date). Jelly gave me a link to 140Trial2016.exe and I was off to the races. ( Jell, I could not find a text file of where to extract ) By guessing and wisdom from reading this forum, I extracted this to both computers EAW install folder. I also learned I may need to edit the eaw.ini file that is in the same folder as DSP1040offline. I believe the eaw.ini file is properly saved when you use the main menu's game set up. If you want to edit setting that the game's readme explains, you need to be sure you are editing the version file you desire. Box #1 had a 1.28C install on it's E: drive, but the OS on drive C: had been replaced multiple times. To be honest, I forget if I reinstalled EAW from the InfoGames CD or not, so regestry issues may still exist. Box #2 had no games installed. I tried both the copy and paste method and using the InfoGames version installer. No version of EAW would run due to the 8 bit error of XP and later. I did not try to install EAW from the original release's disk. At some point last month I installed MS's latest version of DX9.0c so that I could play PE and other older games on the box. Neither box would recognize the mouse in EAW's game setup menu before I installed a game controller (joystick) to the box. Both boxes would CTD when attempting to leave the menus and enter the simulation. Box #1 displays the main menu correctly. Box #2 displays only the top half of the background, leaving the bottom half blacked out. Mouse clicks in the blacked out space are properly recognized. I downloaded D3Dwindower-english. Again, no readable text file. I assumed it was because I had my box set up to use Japan games. Jell tried to help through PM, but I was just lost. People may want to try DXWnd rather then D3Dwindower, just an option and not a magic bullet. End result: Open D3Dwindower and click on the '+' button. Find the exe for the version of EAW you wish. The version you wish is either in the main EAW folder or where you extracted Jelly's test 1.40 and the DSP. You will only need to add the eaw.exe to D3Dwindower once. After adding the files to D3Dwindower click on the triangular button that shows 'activate emulation' if you hold the mouse over it. This will 'Hook' the exes to use D3Dwindower, while D3Dwindower is active. If you close D3Dwindower it will not work. You can run EAW by clicking on the version you added and then clicking the computer icon (run program) of D3Dwindower or minimaze D3Dwindower and launching from a desktop icon or Jelly's DSP. If D3Dwindower is working properly, you will see a standard Windows header (same as any MS 'window') at the top of the screen. If you do not see the min, max, close buttons then D3Dwindower is not active. D3Dwindower cured my half menu on box #2. My performance seemed improved on box #1. Box #2 continued to crash while attempting instant action until I set up a single mission and had a successful launch. I do not remember if it continued to crash while the choices were random, but I set the types of aircraft for each fight and box #2 worked. As it stands now, both boxes in 128c and 140 do see the mouse after a joystick was added and seem to still see the mouse after removal of the MS SW FF steering wheel used for testing. Box #2 is not able to use a glide wrapper. Glide is offered in the games configuration, but when I try to fly instant action it crashes, where single mission tells me Glide has crashed. Box #1 was the less painful and I assume that is because it was not a fresh install. For any first flight, I suggest a single mission where you dictate what type of aircraft will be used. Sorry for my usual bad spelling and thanks to Jelly for pointing me in the correct direction.

Sorry Jon, but a few beers and my usual rude self make me take exception to your sentence. My son just DL a game from Steam in no time, and it was 4G!!
Steam pays $ to ensure that your good uplink is maximized for download. I can not believe that you of all people are complaining about the download speeds of the files that Jelly has placed on the internet for free download. I have had to revert to dial-up speed internet, don't whine about free download speeds. with respect always. That Prick Al.

I have had no reports from anyone else about problems in downloading files from OneDrive. Given that upload speeds are slower how do you think I managed to upload files of nearly 1 gig in 20 minutes or so? John Fix your post in the Hotmail and OneDrive thread that starts with "https://www.mediafire.com/folder" The rest of the text is so wide it has pushed everything else off screen

Good news! After 7 attempts, I got a full download! Funny thing, the download speed was 500 to 700Kb, not the bare 60Kb I was getting yesterday. OK, now to stop Avast deleting the d3d.dll.

Great but fix that crazy post in my "hotmail" thread: Look at the scrollbar at the bottom: I have to click 7 times in the blank space to get it to the right in order to see the end of that long line: It is stuffing up the entire thread. At first sight all of my posts look blank, just like MarkEAW's post above yours. Your post is unusable anyway, so please delete it

The original version had 7217 error CTD lines all over the place so you did not know which one was causing the crash. So I renumbered them, and there is only one 72170: // init dd
if (!ddInit(ScreenWidth, ScreenHeight, 8))
{
clean_exit(72170, NULL);
} Things to try: 1. It might be due to the settings in the "eaw.ini" file in the download, so make sure the screen is set to 1024x768. 2. If this does not work then try the d3dwindower program.

I have that download running perfectly on my desktop PC in Win-10, Win-7 and also in Vista on my laptop, so if there is a missing file this should have emerged. Make sure you fly a single mission, and select everything so nothing is "random". That 72170 error suggests there is a problem with your graphics card/driver, and it may only be partially fixed. Are you using d3d according to the set-up screen? I use AVG free but occasionally it gets worried about the the eaw.exe and the D3dwindower.exe, and I have to tell it not to protect me
