This was the best commercial of Superbowl XXXIV in 2000.

There's now even an Urban Dictionary page for the phrase "Herding Cats"

https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=herding+cats

By the way, EDS, a company founded by H. Ross Perot in 1962, has since become part of Hewlett Packard.

"Herding Cats" was a phrase long before that commercial, but that is a great one.

I was working for EDS when that was released. I actually have a shirt with that on it. Will have to see if I can dig it up.

I wouldn't know- I was in boot camp during that time, and while my Division Commanders all went on and on about what a great game it was, they didn't feel like we needed to watch it. Unlike other, lesser divisions in our ship who were behind us in training.

That was the Super Bowl where the Tennessee Titans lost the game by 1 yard.

I have an EDS cup with the "herding cats" tag line and a cowboy holding two cats.

My wife hadn't heard the phrase before and thought it was just stupid.

I thought it was clever but weird for an IT company. Then again, EDS is from Texas.

[edit]

I mean, I would have remembered it if all the computers hadn't of crashed after the Y2K disaster.

If I recall correctly that only lasted until about 1998. I remember hearing about the recent split from GM from several employees when I first joined EDS. It also explains why EDS employees got discounts on GM vehicles. I never took advantage of that offer though.

I sometimes wonder what will happen to that massive corporate park/campus in Plano, TX that used to be the headquarters of EDS? EDS is tiny compared to what it used to be before the buyout and even HP itself is downsizing.

Worth a read:

Supposedly a non-fiction novel it gives a bit of insight into how EDS worked as a company...

It's a beautiful building.

I didn't know GM bought them out and then closed them which led to HP taking over.

No. EDS was spun off from GM around 1998 and EDS then became its own entirely separate company until the HP buyout which I think was around 2006? EDS was never "closed" by GM and the spin-off had nothing to do with the HP buyout years later.

edit: Ok, so the buyout was in 2008. Thanks Krazikanuk.

On May 13, 2008, Hewlett-Packard Co. confirmed that it had reached a deal with EDS to acquire the company for $13.9 billion.

EDS employed a lot of people here in the Detroit area at one time. My former boss worked for them for over 25 years, and then was laid off.

Yup. Right when I started with EDS in 1998 a lot of the old-timer managers who had been with EDS for over 20 years were being offered buy-outs. No doubt it was the result of GM spinning off EDS.
