Filmmaker Rian Johnson is already making a few special modifications to the Star Wars universe. The director (best known for Brick and Looper) has started rolling cameras on Star Wars: Episode VIII, according to Disney CEO Bob Iger. The galactic sequel was set to begin in January, but principal photography was pushed back a few weeks around the same time the movies release was shifted from May 2017 to December of that year.
Iger said the company had a simple strategy for the future of Star Wars: dont lose sight of what sold all those tickets and merchandise.
There is no better way to propel this franchise into the future than producing quality products, he said. Filming of Star Wars: Episode VIII, the next chapter of the legendary saga, has just commenced and it will be in theaters December 2017. And production of Episode IX, a 2019 release, has also begun.
They are really going to milk this completely aren't they?
I bet they are already working on the scripts for X, XI and XII as well.

If you paid 4 billion dollars for a franchise wouldn't you do the same?

Not Abrams? It would be interesting to know what direction they're taking this to. IMO Abrams never really brought anything new to Star Trek and Star WArs. He just kinda repackaged them.
I think the third Star Trek is the first real effort to do something different. Though personally, I hated the trailer and the direction they're going.
Really curious about an original, not repackaged/recycled Star Wars movie.

It basically happened right after the release and success of Episode IV. That's when Lucas got the rights to all of the merchandising and when he started building his ILM and Lucasfilm empires.

Abrams is staying on as one of the executive producers so he will still have creative input.
As for your second point, don't count on it. Remember that Episode VII has been insanely successful so therefore that forumla will not be changed for Episode VIII.

And that's not mentioning the "Anthology" films like Rogue One, and the Han Solo and Boba Fett Stories. Plus, although there is currently only one animated series (Rebels) more will soon be coming. And don't forget the theme parks and merchandising.

When does Rogue One come out? I thought those movies would be on the alternating years, but I haven't heard anything about one this year. I loved the new movie, even if it was a familiar story. I had a couple of things about it I wouldn't have done, but over all I was very impressed. Can't wait for more of them, even the side movies.
Rogue One comes out in 10 months. Ep 8 comes out 12 months later. The Han Solo film is presumed to come out 12 months after that, with Ep 9 coming 12 months after that.
I think they're waiting for Ep VII to leave theaters before they start promoting Rogue One. It's still in my local theater, in 2D and 3D.

I always find it funny that people criticize Disney for making more Star Wars movies considering they paid 4 billion USD for them. What should they do, just let the property collect dust? I would be making movies right and left and cash in. I would have no qualms about it either.

NOT interested.
I knew the 35 year old plus long time SW fan would not be the key demo for these new shows anyway.

Why would you think any series with "LEGO" in the title was aimed at anything other than a children's demo?

I meant that I was hoping Disney would be making a live action show like what Lucas was trying to do instead of doing a Lego animated series.
