I still don't get why this story has received so much media attention? It's definitely a sad thing what happened with a guy dying relatively young from a heart attack but it's almost like the media is trying to draw a correlation between this unfortunate man dying and donuts.

has he died because he fell off a bicycle, you would not be reading about it, people wouldn't even be talking about it here.
That's my point though. Take out the Krispy Kreme aspect and I highly doubt this incident would have made it past the local Raleigh news. I mean how many hundreds or maybe thousands of Americans die every year from a heart attack while doing some kind of physical activity?

Read the article, the man didn't make it to the KK store before expiring. The news media doesn't care about details like that. Just the fact that the run had a Krispy Kreme endorsement was all they needed.

Right, we know this is true. Now to expand on this- take the Krispy Kreme aspect out of it and maybe it's a local confection maker like Steve's Donuts. Doesn't carry the same flavor, does it? You can imagine the types of people in the media looking over these stories and deciding which makes for a better headline and saying 'yeah this gets people'...go with that. Krispy Kreme donuts vs. Steve's Donuts. Well, one is certainly more known and sounds more funny, doesn't it. So, that probably would be the story that more likely gets the ink. Steve Donut's might have some aspect about it that they have to play up to make it sound as funny, because Krispy Kreme is a silly name and has name brand recognition. I personally don't think that there is much interest in promoting anything that might be for the public good in this kind of thing; first and foremost the idea is to entertain, that's what gets the public's attention. That's what's needed for a business like that to survive. It's kind of why culture just becomes glib and shallow like that overall. People don't really get upset over stories like that, they find reasons to poke fun out of it or find it as passing, shallow amusement. Maybe it's society's way of desensitizing itself, given the state of what goes on in the world. We're constantly bombarded by horrific images in the world brought to us by the news, so we learn as a species to actually make fun of it as a psychological ploy, it actually becomes more a form of entertainment, people will crack jokes about it and that sort of thing. Even when I see things like stories about people getting murdered or blown up or being the victims of pollution or violent crime or whatever you can name- you still see things like reader's comments managing to inject some kind of off the wall or sarcastic humor, some take the opportunity to insert or rant about their worldviews in their diatribes, or even show disgust for the 'victims', but actual empathy for the people does not exist, not without something coming attached with it. I think most of us do this at some time or another, we don't so much connect with the deaths but the story itself is a form of entertainment.

My uncle Ward (God rest his soul) was a what we called around here "a hard ticket". He drank too much, smoked 2 packs a day, swore, ate the WORST kind of foods and was argumentative ....but I liked him. He died over 30 years ago
When he was just over 90 his mind started to go and he went to live in a nursing home near his daughter. One morning he just finished a BIG breakfast of bacon and eggs and sopped up the bacon grease with his toast. He leaned back in his chair to light up a smoke and just kept going backwards and was dead when he hit the floor.
That's how I want to go . ......lean back after a good meal and croak. He certainly got dealt a great hand from genetics since he lived to be over 90 with such an unhealthy lifestyle!

It's not about endorsing Krispy Kreme. Here in Raleigh it's a very, very popular fundraising event put on every year by NC State that raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for the North Carolina Children's Hospital. It's newsworthy because of how high profile the race is in the local community, and even within the region. Thousands of runners come from all over the east coast to take part every year.
Context matters.
Also, I definitely wouldn't want to go out like that- those 2.5 - 3 miles back, after stuffing down twelve cold, hard sugar bombs is painful. There's a reason both sides of the last quarter mile are lined with trash cans.

Hmmm, I'd have to say I'd like to die like my Great-Grandmother.
She was over 100 years old (104, IIRC) and sharp as a tack. One morning she slept in rather than getting up with the rest of the farm, and they went to check on her.
"I'm fine, just tired," she said, smiling. "I think I'll just stay in bed and think about whether or not I want to eat dinner later on."
When they went in to say dinner was ready she wasn't going to be joining them. I guess she decided enough was enough.
The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events. More dumb stuff at http://www.darts-page.comFrom Laser: "The forum is the place where combat (real time) flight simulator fans come to play turn based strategy combat."

I want to die like my grandfather did (in his sleep), not like the screaming people in the back seat.
:-)
ps NavyNuke, you know Daylight doughnuts are to die for...I mean better than KKs. I haven't had Daylight doughnuts (I'll have to swing up that way some time), but I'm a big fan of Duck Doughnuts.

Going for outrageous wishes, I want to die alone without a single human for miles around. Don't want to hear a single human voice. Don't want to see a single human being including me, so no mirrors.

I see it more along the lines of news as entertainment I agree and do enjoy this type of news. Not to be taken too seriously, despite the seriousness of it

Have no doubt I will more then likely die alone on the job somewhere here. Morning will start like every day. Getting the wife and son off to work at Walmart and I come home to get my day started on my endless repair list, if its not snowing, then I must shovel and blow snow before getting back to the priority fixit list. Will probably find me dead some day under a bathroom or kitchen faucet replacing frozen shutoff valves to be able to replace the faucet.
Then my phones will ring for hours till someone decides to come check on me. Could be days before finding me.
