No driving on the agenda today, so I thought it would be a good time to do some alcohol testing. Had a late breakfast at 10 AM, at 11 AM I kicked back 4 1.5 oz shots of 80 proof vodka (I'm about an even 200 lbs. this morning). It's 11:30 AM and if the BAC Calculator is correct... http://dui.drivinglaws.org/calc.php...I should be blowing about a 0.075 right about now. This is *under* the legal limit for driving in Louisiana. This is freggin' INSANE, no way in HELL I should be behind the wheel right now, I'm buzzing like a mofo! Wife was right (as always), I should limit my pre-concert drink to 2 shots (not 4). [EDIT: Although it'll likely end up being be 3]. I'll report back in an hour or so (affects should be wearing off). Just FYI, I have annual physicals including ALT testing, my organs at 48 are just fine.

It is now, at least for the next couple of hours. I've had to review my posts on this thread several times before hitting submit, I'm still feeling it but not as much. I should be at about 0.040999999999999995 now, still buzzed but not as much. I'm kinda fascinated by the whole thing, I've never experienced it so methodically before. A real eye-opener, really.

Couple things I wanted to mention:
1. I'm not a heavy drinker. Even when I did drink heavily it was always for special occasions, sometimes I go weeks and even months without any alcohol. Only recently at local concerts have I started drinking outside of the house (thus my interest in the DUI thread), I probably won't drink again until the next concert, Mar. 4. EDIT: I try to limit drinking to no more than twice a month, including date nights.
2. Breakfast was light, a small one-egg sandwich on English muffin.
In case any of this matters.

Breathalyzers are notoriously inaccurate if they don't have a control to configure it properly. You can drink a shot of whiskey and blow a high amount if you test it too early. I still want to try it one day. I'm looking at them now online, you have to pay almost $300.00 to get one that's supposedly as accurate as what the police use. I'll probably do this again with a cheap one, just to see how it compares with the BAC calculator estimates.

Mark Just some info for you about alcohol consumption (Well, as we are led to believe here in Aussie anyway) The standard measure for a shot is 30ml spirit, at 40% alc.vol To remain under .05 as a general rule: Male - 2 drinks the first hour and 1 every hour after that Female - 1 drink the first hour and 1 every hour after that Now having said this, there are also some variables to consider Weight- You being a large framed person gives you an advantage, the lesser weight increases higher readings Food - Having food before you drink helps break down the alcohol into the bloodstream even though you only had a small breakfast. As well, home made spirits may have a higher alc.vol than distillery produced if not monitored through the process of making. I will give you a link that we use as a guide for safe drinking consumption just as an interest. http://www.alcohol.gov.au/internet/alcohol/publishing.nsf/content/drinksguide-cntIn the end, it not matters where you are in the world .... .05 is till .05 Cheers

It's been about an hour, I should be blowing a 0.03924999999999999, still feeling pretty buzzed.
A little confused on the shots, should have said, "2 shots (not 4)". I'm wondering if bar drinks are as strong as homemade? I typically tip $2.00 for a ~$5.00 drink, this can't be stiffing the bartender, right?
Am new at buying individual drinks, it's been many years until recently.
Or is it that straight shots are more potent than mixed drinks?
In any case, I wouldn't want to be driving right now.
$2 on $5 is a 40% tip, which is pretty generous, although a lot of people tip like that when they are getting drinks one at a time. As far as amounts, it kind of depends on what you get. A straight shot of something, or something on the rocks was usually 1.25 oz while a mixed drink would only get 1oz for a single or 2 for a double. Not a huge difference, but enough that over the course of the night I could use that extra little bit to even out what I give away to regulars and good tippers. Quick terminology lesson: - If you order a bourbon and ginger, rum and coke, gin and tonic, etc it will come as a single unless you ask for something else. - A double will come in a bigger glass, but will have twice the alcohol and more mixer. This doesn't necessarily mean the ratio of alcohol to mixer is the same. The glasses our doubles came in weren't twice the size of the singles glass so you would usually get a higher amount of alcohol per volume of mixer. - Triples may or may not be legal where you are. In LA I would assume so, but here in VA they are illegal. - You can usually order a drink "tall" which is a single in the same size glass as a double but with more mixer. - Light ice /= a stronger drink. It is actually the opposite because you get a measured volume of liquor and the missing ice will be replaced with more mixer. This was always a pet peeve of mine, especially with the rednecks and college kids around here. Also, alcohol effects everyone differently. As pointed out above there are a number of factors involved in how intoxicated someone is. When I was bartending it was always a judgement call as to how drunk someone was. Sometimes it was one and done for a person, although if that happened I usually assumed someone had either been drinking before they came in or was on something.

marko1231123, I'm sorry to hear about your mother-in-law. I've made road trips when I needed more sleep and yeah, it's scary. What worked best for me (after cranking up the aftermarket sound) was eating sunflower seeds. I'd put a handful at a time in my mouth (usually BBQ or Ranch) and let them soak (a little burn), then crack them one at a time with my front teeth and hand, spitting the shells into small paper bag, the top folded over. It may seem irresponsible, driving the interstate (usually late-night) while cracking and spitting shells into a bag, but nothing kept me more alert when I really needed the help. ++++++++++ LB4LB, I can't speak for your experience, but while "just having one beer can be disastrous" for you, it should still equate to 1 drink (assuming 12 fl oz beer) on the BAC calculator... http://dui.drivinglaws.org/calc.php...and should dissipate rather quickly, according to your weight, which I know is really low right now. ++++++++++ Urban Furball, thanks for the info. My vodka bottle is also 40% alcohol by volume, both vodka bottles and the rum (I guess it's a standard, as is 80 proof?). ++++++++++ I'm going to write another post drawing my conclusions of today's...experiment.

Before my conclusions, I just wanted to say (what most if not all of you already know) that I was not drunk today, not by the numbers nor with how I felt. I had a really good buzz going but I wasn't drunk, I *know* drunk. For example, what I drank today was not nearly enough liquid courage to make a fool of myself on a dance floor, I'd need twice that amount just for starters!
A little confession, for every cruise I'd bring my own 5th of Crown onto the ship in my carry-on, knock back a full glass of straight Crown before leaving my cabin for the evening (on dancing nights and nights before sea days) and *still* ring up a sizable bar tab on my cruise card (except the one cruise where we won 20 free drinks from Cruise Critic).
I was also much heavier and in general, didn't give a flip about my health.
++++++++++
I conclude that I can drink a "triple" (e.g. 3 x 1.5 oz. shots of vodka), get a nice buzz and keep it for a reasonable amount of time, and [probably] still drive home that same night without *any* alcohol in my system.
++++++++++
The numbers again from today are:
1.5 fl oz shots of hard liquor = 4 Your weight in pounds = 200
0 hrs.: 0.075 1 hr.: 0.057999999999999996 2 hrs.: 0.040999999999999995 3 hrs.: 0.023999999999999993 4 hrs.: 0.006999999999999992 5 hrs.: 0
++++++++++
"Barkeep...decrease vodka to 3 shots and recompute." - Capt. Ramius
++++++++++
1.5 fl oz shots of hard liquor = 3 Your weight in pounds = 200
0 hrs.: 0.056249999999999994 1 hr.: 0.03924999999999999 <- start of concert 2 hrs.: 0.022249999999999992 3 hrs.: 0.005249999999999991 <- end of concert, walk for coffee 4 hrs.: 0 <- drive home
++++++++++
Ah #%&*$#!
To make it worth my while I won't have much 0.000 time cushion. I don't know when between the 3rd and 4th hour that my BAC would hit 0.000. Waiting 4 hours for 3 "drinks" is still better than any advice I've seen on the internet, which ranges from 45 min. to the standard 1 hr. per "drink". I need to think about this and make sure I understand what a "drink" is (which also applies to you dinner drinkers).
EDIT: The BAC Calculator is indorsed by MADD of Canada.

ForSquirrels, maybe you can answer this... When I pour a shot, I go to the top of the shot glass, even closer than the pic I posted (I have to keep my hand steady not to spill any). I thought this was 1.5 oz., not 1 oz. or 1.25 oz. But when I pour 3 of these into a measuring cup (using water), I'm getting right at 6 oz., using two separate measuring cups. Should 3 shots = 6 oz. (what I drank today)? To a bartender, how many shots did I actually drink? EDIT: Is this what Master was talking about (if 1 oz. is a typical shot [for a mixed drink], I'm doubling)? In any case, at 6 oz. I should calculate for 4 1.5 oz. shots, not 3. I think I need to add an extra shot to the BAC calculator.
