https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Truman_Show#The_Truman_Show_delusionJoel Gold, a psychiatrist at the Bellevue Hospital Center, revealed that by 2008, he had met five patients with schizophrenia (and heard of another twelve) who believed their lives were reality television shows. Gold named the syndrome "The Truman Show delusion" after the film and attributed the delusion to a world that had become hungry for publicity. The syndrome predominantly affects young white men.[45]
Gold stated that some patients were rendered happy by their disease, while "others were tormented". One traveled to New York to check whether the World Trade Center had actually fallenbelieving the 9/11 attacks to be an elaborate plot twist in his personal storyline. Another came to climb the Statue of Liberty, believing that he would be reunited with his high-school girlfriend at the top and finally be released from the show.[45]
In August 2008, the British Journal of Psychiatry reported similar cases in the United Kingdom.[46] The delusion has informally been referred to as "Truman syndrome", according to an Associated Press story from 2008.[47]
After hearing about the condition, writer of The Truman Show Andrew Niccol crassly said: "You know you've made it when you have a disease named after you." Well, no one is fooling me! It's obvious this Forum is all a show just for me. I mean, there's no other reason for someone to have nearly 100K posts here!

I won't be goaded into breaking the fourth wall.

There does seem to be a great deal of delusional people out there today. Entertainment is such a large part of people's lives today that I think many have trouble telling the difference between reality and fantasy.

There does seem to be a great deal of delusional people out there today. Some even became famous for it like the Kardashians.

Delusions might in a sense be hard wired into us or they are unavoidable for a self aware animal. It's difficult to conceive how a frog or an insect are delusional. It might be a balancing act whether delusions are healthy or not.
Most everyone is egotistical and narcissistic to a degree- it's virtually unavoidable. One can only really experience life from his or own perspective, or at least, that comes first. An individual without a sense of self- well, that's probably a very difficult situation for the rest of us to grasp. If you attempt to imagine existence without the self, you are probably attempting what some cosmological worldviews and some religions describe as Nirvana- translated as 'self extinguishing,' total ego death. Not practical for everyday life, but then again, those views are trying to achieve exactly that, escape from existence and consciousness. Sure.
Is it a delusion that man thinks himself the center of the universe, or that the universe has a special plan with him in mind? Different cultures will grapple with that idea, and different individuals will likely spar with that.

Is it a delusion that man thinks himself the center of the universe, or that the universe has a special plan with him in mind? Different cultures will grapple with that idea, and different individuals will likely spar with that. Yes, a mystic would explain that you are both right and wrong - you are the centre of the universe, but you also aren't who you think you are. That of you which is at the centre of the universe is perfectly equally that part of everyone else which is the centre of the universe, and in all cases it has no stake in what you are vitally interested in - the satisfaction of your desires. In fact, you pretty much have to discard your interest in your desires in order to identify with that part of you. So, you can only get in good with the universe if you have no agenda to use your connection for your personal benefit; in fact you pretty much have to lose the notion of personal benefit in order to make the connection. This is a clever design, it keeps the manifest universe reasonably stable. However, there is always the possibility that you could game the system, somehow crib it a bit, so you can get the connection and still carry some personal preference. Then the universe might take on a slight tilt as a result of your influence...
