At least for a few more years, based on the confirmation from the "big boss".

Secretary of Defense Ash Carter this week confirmed what had been rumored for months: The Air Force's ground attack jet, the inelegant but well-armed and well-armored A-10 Thunderbolt, nicknamed the "Warthog," will not face retirement until at least at least six years.

Is this even the first time this month that this has been reported?

First "official" word from the boss. However, the writing was on the wall almost two years ago, Congress threatened to cut funding and Army and USMC was more than willing to to step in and do a dedicated fixed win CAS mission. Although the USAF has been trying to cut the A-10 since the early 90s, they weren't going to risk $$$ (or letting the Army have a fixed wing mission) to do it.

I... uh...

The Army has not expressed any interest what so ever in acquiring fixed wing aviation, neither has the USMC expressed any interest in the A-10. I really don't see where people are getting the "give them to the Marines/Army, they want them" because they really don't. They both like it, but the Army doesn't like it to the extent of all that trouble and the huge expenses and aside from those aspects, the Marines just won't take anything that can't do S/VTOL. Man, the modifications you'd need to make the A-10 fit in there...

You are probably far more spot on, most of what I heard was conjecture which I did not initially indicate as such.

Yes, that's today.

In 1989, it was a different matter. The Army was seriously talking about how to pick up the A-10, its pilots and crewmen, as the USAF had started talking about getting rid of it.

Then 1990 and Desert Shield and 1991 and Desert Storm and suddenly the USAF was all "What? Get rid of the A-10? Oh, we were just kidding!"

The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events.
