My friend at work shared his father's diary with me that he recently found.
We just thought this was facinating, seeing these entries from almost 72 years ago!
His father was Fredrick Wesson II, and he was a B-24 Pilot in England with the 8Th AF 490th Bombardment Sqd.
Captain Wesson would start out in the B-24s, and then transition to the B-17s.
His diary reads like a "WWII Tweet", hahah, since he just wrote about 2-3 sentences when he wrote something.
Capt Wesson became the Sqd Element Leader, and then Formation Leader. After that he became some kind of Group commmander.
After the War, Major Wesson went into what became Strategic Air Command (SAC), and he was a high mucky-muck on the air base.
SAC was very very stressful, with everyone on high alert for nuclear attack, and always near phones for recall to the base.
While in SAC, he piloted the B-36 Peacekeeper, and even flew the new B-52 Stratofortress.
He retired from the military shortly in the early 60's, and the USAF wanted him back bad enough that they were going to promote him to
Brigadier General, but he told them he had enough. And he passed away at age 50 from a heart attack 7 months later.
The Military gave the family benefits, because at the time Stress Related Death from being in SAC was a huge problem.
In the Crew Picture, Capt Wesson is the 2nd from right, Rear Row, with the khaki colored cap.
