This has been around for a while with Amazon, years I suppose.
If the return is due to a product defect or Amazon's error, then return shipping has been free for me. But if the return is because I changed my mind, then I have to pay return shipping. This is similar to many other stores.
I'm not a Prime customer, BTW.

I have been a prime member for the past five years and they have always charged for returns for reasons not involving an error or defect.
Nothing new here, and I wouldn't expect them to pay for my error in the first place.
This is based on a history of over a thousand orders.

I'm not a Prime customer, BTW. Hi, I have been a prime member for many years now, maybe I just got lucky? My impression and that of everyone I know with a Prime account (which is a paid service) has been that they have never been charged before for delivery nor returns for any reason & they were all surprised to hear that I was being charged Juggernaut

I'm a Prime customer (signed on during the free trial, then forgot and missed the termination deadline by two days), and there's another thing to be aware of: sometimes their "two-day" delivery isn't.
I ordered a Prime item on 1/23,(at the time I placed the order it said to choose two-day delivery at checkout to get the item by 1/26) and it wasn't delivered until 1/27. One day, sure, but when you're paying nearly $100 for "free" two-day shipping you should get two-day shipping.
SALUTE TO ALL!

I ordered a TV, gcard and wall mount and it came as if I ordered over night shipping even though I selected 2-day.

OP: was the item sold by Amazon or by a third party vendor? I don't think returns are free unless the items ships from and is sold by Amazon. Sold by ISS Inc and Fulfilled by Amazon. That is probably why. There are reports that Amazon has slowed down shipping for non-Prime members. I've ordered most my PC hardware from them the past few years. Next time I place an order I'll have to keep that in mind. Typically get 5 day shipping, but sometimes it had taken over a week. Last order only took 3 days; this was in October.

I've returned 3 items since Christmas, 2 purchased through amazon prime, not a vendor, and there was no charge. Another one where I dealt with the vendor, it was different and they dealt with it by their own terms, not amazon. In that case, they told me to just keep the item and they refunded me 33%, since it wasn't expensive and not worth the shipping back to them. If you dealt with a vendor and they did not have amazon handling their shipping and returns (NOT "fulfilled by Amazon"), then you're dealing with the vendor themselves. If it was from a vendor, but fulfilled by Amazon, then prime DOES apply and amazon handles it as if they sold it. That means the seller sent the items to Amazon to hold in their warehouse and ship from them, not the vendor. Amazon agrees to handle the returns in exchange for a small fee. Whenever I sell things on Amazon, I always have them fulfill it. Ship it off to them, on their account (read: cheap) and the shipping/fulfillment fee comes out of what I make on the sale. I never have to hear about any returns since Amazon would handle all of that. Shipping times are a little stricter, and the charge for faster delivery has changed a bit, as well as Sat. delivery. I can't blame them. Still a great service. On returns again, I've never seen a charge when going to Amazon with UPS drop off. UPS pick up has had a $6 charge for a midsized item, but sometimes that's free too for a small item. I always do the drop off. When the item is scanned in at UPS, Amazon is informed and the refund is issued that evening, if not sooner. Sending this back today, a small item:

I was given the same options as what you showed in the image, but both of them had the same charge (around $6 for both) - it did not matter if I was dropping off or having it picked up. (There was actually a 3rd option which I cannot remember which also had the same $6 charge). This is the first and only time (so far) that I have seen this with Amazon Prime. But if I changed the reason for the return to something other than what I picked, then it went away. I guess that is my punishment for trying to be honest... Juggernaut

That's what you get! LOL I always pick "unauthorized purchase" and no comments since they aren't required, so I guess that explains it. At least you can change it.

In my many years I don't think I've ever returned a thing to Amazon. I can't remember one time. Not to say I didn't do it, but if so it's so infrequent that I can't remember it.
I do recall returning stuff to Newegg a time or two though.
I do know for a fact I've never been charged for returning anything anywhere, but maybe I've always had circumstances they wouldn't argue.

Hi guys,
I bought something on amazon.com with amazon prime and when I went to return it, they were charging me for return shipping. This has never happened before. There is nothing on the listing about charging for returns.
It was asking me for a reason for the return and if I just said I didn't need the item then I was charged to return it. If I said it was broken then it was not charged.
I spoke with a representative who told me that they will charge anyone who is returning for a "customer error" reason. I asked for the info in writing and they referred me to a return link which does not say anything about this at all, nor how to know if the item listing would result in a charge for a return.
Anyway - the good days of Amazon Prime may be coming to an end if this is any sign of things to come.
Good Luck
Juggernaut This isn't new at all. Why would they pay return shipping for "didn't want it?" I do know they will pay return shipping on things like shoes that don't fit, etc or of course their error....

Prime is an amazing deal. Forget the free shipping, the video service alone is worth the fee. Everything else is just icing on the cake.

A credit score for returns?
The streaming music is pretty good too. TONS of music you can stream, just add it to your library. Has to play on their app, but can be downloaded for offline.
