https://discordapp.com/This program is made by the same guys who made .slack Its a online chat program that is based around communities. You post a link to the chat and people get added to your community. Once in the community they can chat freely with both text and voice. Its a cool program. Granted it is not going to replace teamspeak anytime soon since it is not as feature rich and it's codex is about twice as bad as the default ts codex (voice quality vs bandwidth) But its free. I went ahead and made a SimHQ chat if anyone is interested in checking it out. Just click the link and it should take you to the chat website. There is a phone and pc application as well. https://discord.gg/0m2XEcx3ywjsGkFtI've been using it for several games now. Starcitizen and Squad both have discord chats going. Starcitizen even has an official one which they post updates on the patches and etc to.

Punt for round 2. Though with SimHQ already having a TS channel this might not seem all that useful except for chat. Still there are tons of gaming communities using discord that you can join with one account and follow different gaming news. For instance The starcitizen devs have an official discord where they post patch updates and etc https://discordapp.com/invite/0dOJaNbubQie6CZNreddit /r/Starcitizen is https://discord.gg/0STCP5tSe7yaWr3Hreddit /r/joinsquad is (they have devs who post there) https://discordapp.com/invite/0VcFH6sxVnnN3hfjThere are plenty of others. If you have a game you can pretty much search out a discord chat for it's community.

I got this a week ago, works well for games that TS doesn't work in for example Battlefield and GTA both have issues which for me anyway ends up with no sound in game or permanently muted in TS.

I am surprised more people on simhq dont use it. I've been using TeamSpeak for years now and have had no incentive to change to another program.

How do you normally use it?
Is it like IRC where you just have a permanent chat channel going and your friends join and leave throughout the day as they feel like chatting?

Yes, that is normally how I use it. People come online and chat for a bit then go offline. At it's base it is a text chat. People can log in and post comments and others can read them. It's not like TS text chat where the text goes away when you log out. This text persists and you can read the backlog if you really want when you first log in. You can also set it up with a phone app so that if people log in and start talking you get notified on your phone and can talk on your phone. It also has voice coms in a channel format. By default you are not connected to voice coms but if you want to use voice you can join a comms channel separate to the text channel and talk there. Then you can log out of voice coms and still remain on text chat. Break down of image On far left is a list of servers I am a member of. Each server has it's own users with their own text and voice channels. You can only join channels with a join channel link like the one posted here. https://discord.gg/0m2XEcx3ywjsGkFtMy channels are (from top to bottom) Alt.Games.Warbirds, Churp (small friend chat), SimHQ, Medieval Europe.EU, Escape from Tarkov, Battlefield 1, Squad, StarCitizen Official Just to the right of that is the text channel and voice channel list for the SimHQ server. These can be expanded as needed by the person running the server just like with TS. Below that is the voice connection status and your user name and settings to the right of that is the text channels. This text is persistent unlike TS. It also changes based on which text channel you have selected. On the far right is the user list showing who is online and their status (away etc)

Cool, thanks for the detailed explanation, is that your own Discord server or just a SimHQ channel on a public free server?
There's a group of us here on SimHQ that started out playing MWO together and play other stuff together as well, and we used to post stuff about MWO and those other games in the MWO subforum, because we all checked that subforum and it was otherwise dead, but all of a sudden our OT threads in there started getting moved and it sort of quashed our communications, so we've been using email and TS mainly.
This could be a useful option for us to join something persistent each evening and figure out if anyone is up for some gaming, I like that the history of the text chat stays... right now we mostly check if someone is hanging out on TS waiting to play.

It's just an unofficial SimHQ server that I set up a while back. But it is very easy to set up a server on discord and each server can have a bunch of different channels. Or just have them all join this one. The way the servers work is like this. Anyone can set one up for free. The person who sets the server up is the ADMIN and can change everything on it from name to access rights. Then they give out a link and anyone with that link can join that server. So as long as that link isnt posted publicly its not a public server. But the server is hosted by the discord team though they have no direct access to the content on the server. So there are no fees involved.
We use it for gaming like that also. We all log in and discuss what game we want to play then jump on TS. It works very well for that sort of thing. It's not a replacement for a forum though because even though it is persistent it's not very easy to search the back history and find links and etc someone posted.

Jusyt spent a happy couple of hours on Discord with Master who talked me through it. Thanks bud Yep, I can see the attraction. It works.
As an aside....Remember Windows Messenger? That was always the first port of call, for me, when heading online for an evenings gaming. Is there anything like that available? A basic, txt based, prog? I know Discord is that way inclined and I like the persistent txt, so mebbe this is the one to use. Feck, Im talking to myself again! Im going all Alzheimers. Ignore me.

That is pretty much what that discord chat is. It's like AOLim or MSN messenger except it specializes in group chat instead of 1 on 1 but it does have 1 on 1 if you add someone as a friend. It will also show you what all of your friends are currently playing if they have that option activated. There are other gamer specific chat programs too. Teamspeak has one called "overwolf." And there is a popular one called http://xfire.com/ that is used by many people. If you just want a chat program though you can try a program called telegram ( telegram.org ) But the thing with all these type programs is that you have to have all of your friends using a specific one for it to be of any use to you There in lies the problem.
