I once watched a U2 do an unrestricted climb when it was leaving an airshow - I couldn't believe how fast it climbed for an airplane of that age and size. That thing got RIGHT out of town! Yep. I saw one take off from Beale AFB when I was there in 2010 on my way to Reno. Climbed like a homesick angel!
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Yes, and then when it reached 80k, it fly`s like a glider, airspeed must be maintained within a MPH or Stall. Even with engine output close to max. Stall speed at 80k is unbelievably high. living on the edge.

It's a pretty awesome aircraft even today. Why do they have a truck join it on touch-down?

The chase car calls out altitude over the runway, and when the plane is down to a couple of feet, the pilot deploys spoilers to drastically reduce lift and land on the runway. It's apparantly very hard to land, partly because it produces massive amounts of lift, and would just float forever. Heres a pretty good article about it

They have a detachment here at Osan AB and they are indeed amazing to watch. One of my buddies was telling me how he was going to submit his name to bid on the Camaro chase car they supposedly have, that's put up for auction locally. Not certain if he ever won it, but I thought it was cool to have a high performance car chasing them down the runway, by the back up pilot.
Totally great video and articles overall. Thanks for the links Dachs and Piper.
