I was reading up on the different levels of DEFCON and I came across this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axe_murder_incident#Operation_Paul_Bunyan

Strange I didn't hear of this back then.

Was it kept secret from the media and the world and just recently declassified?

Were the ones responsible executed by the NK administration?

I was there. I was in the 2nd Inf Div and up on the border and part of Paul Bunyan. I was a 2lt on my first assignment; Rifle Platoon Leader. Tense times. The Division commander, Gen Bradey, flew his helicopter right along the border so that we could return fire. The North Koreans could shoot across the border, but our Rules of Engagement were that we could only fire on North Koreans firing on us or other US or South Korean units. His helicopter took some hits and they put down behind a ridge to check the damage, and then flew back so he could switch helicopters and continue. It got pretty tense and it appeared that war was imminent. One of the lieutenants in our battalion displayed weakness/fear and was gone immediately. And I mean immediately. Division sent a replacement same day. I have a lot of observations of that time. Night patrols along the wire between active minefields to make sure infiltrators were not cutting the wire, lifting or marking mines, etc. always ready to bump into a night ambush.

Stayed tense for months. Many instances of cross border shooting.

Yep, I remember it.

They shot at the Division Commander helicopter and hit it and we didn't return fire?

It must had been the NK's lucky day!

Thank you for your service, oldgrognard and glad you made it through your tour of Korea unscathed.

Yes, we returned fire. Lots of things that aren't in that article. Both countries wound up denying, covering-up and burying the events.

The area right at the big incident stayed no-fire by both sides, but the units to the sides involved each other in incidents. At the time we grimly joked that World War Tree was about to begin. It was also around then that a large infiltration tunnel dug by the North under the border was discovered. They dug several and were discovered every couple of years.

My father served in Korea back in 67 in the 2nd Inf Div as a radio operator. He recalls going out on patrol once and when he came back after a night patrol his barracks had been blown up and a couple of guys were killed. I don't think he cared for the South Koreans either as they would raise their flag upside down to upset the Koreans.

I am pretty sure the whole US Army was on alert then.

My unit, A Troop 1/3 Armd Cav was at Tank Gunnery in New Mexico when it happened. We went on alert for a couple of days.

I guess this did not make much of a dent in the Canadian news. I was working with a joint venture American/Canadian engineering company at the time; and about 1/2 of our engineering staff were Americans; and I have no recollection of this at all.

Very interesting stuff and I'm also glad you came through in one piece OG. This place would be much worse off without you.

CG2015, you may find this of interest. The title explains why you never heard of this. The Korean War is often referred to as the Forgotten War.

Tunnel number two is the one discovered while I was there. Look at the dimensions. This was no crawl-through tunnel.

I was 14 and I remember this pretty well. It was all over the evening news, in the US at least.

Wow! I didn't know all that.

Like I said, it was most likely kept from the news and the public hence why I never heard of it.

Per chats with other gentlemen the Norks violate the border often (I saw OG also mentioned the tunnels), often resulting in deaths/casualities for both sides.

The sooner North Korea ceases to be a country the better for the rest of the world.

I've never scene this before. I'd heard the operation name "Paul Bunyan" before but did not know anything about it. I was tense just reading the event. Thank you OG for your service and thank you to all those who've done so that we will never know about. I'm sure history is full of these types of encounters not in the public knowledge yet gives a glimpse of what's done all the time on our behalf.

Very creepy and angering the behavior of the North Korean military and the ridiculous and bizarre dishonest lies they bark about their enemies. I watched a video on youtube where a reporter disguised as a tourist with hidden camera, recorded his adventure into North Korea. The ridiculous propaganda that even tour bus guides were saying as in this event was still alive and well. The whole documentary leaves you feeling depressed and it goes to show how dark and oppressed North Korea and her peoples, casualties of that system are.

What I'll never understand are the people from Western countries who visit North Korea.

I would NEVER visit a country that has a reputation for putting people in jail on a whim on trumped up charges of spying or "corrupting" the NK people. This seems to happen a lot with members of the clergy who visit NK.

Same idiots that visit any other bloated dictatorship. Darwinism at work.

It only becomes a problem if we need to rescue them. I'm generally not in favor of such endeavors.

Me either. If you are going to voluntarily visit a repressive totalitarian regime then you assume responsibility for all of the risks that entails.

I wonder what the Pentagon told the family of the 2 murdered U.S. Army Officers?

They were killed in a helicopter training accident and the bodies burned too bad to allow an open casket?

I think it was a little too public an incident for conspiracies like that.
