Shhh... don't tell Duke, but he doesn't really know anything... we just keep him entertained. One tip -- create a throwaway commander first. Go crazy with the game for a week or so. It's easier to do this when you know you're just testing. Then when you're ready and you have an idea for what you want to do, restart and do it serious. 2nd tip -- don't sweat the money. A few thousand credits will seem like a lot at first... but that's okay. If you need help, read this and I'll get you on your way. 3rd tip -- don't be afraid to ask. Don't spam the forums like Duke does though Just kidding DIH!

Oh, and one more thing to remember: 4th tip -- you do not lose money when you swap out modules, so don't be afraid to experiment. You WILL lose money when you sell a ship though. If you strip the ship first before selling it, you lose... 8%? Something like that. 8% or so of the ship's value. But refer to tip #2. Also: THIS THREAD

How I began was just taking each new thing in stride. Hardest part was figuring out what I wanted to do, and then how to do it!

The first few hours, I just ran missions to where ever they led. Usually back and forth between the same stations in the starting system, until I figured it all out. Make sure your FSD drive can get you there, before accepting one, however. Some are pretty distant destinations, lately, and your FSD and fuel tank can be limiting. If fuel is a problem, then make stops along the way to refuel. Scooping fuel costs more and takes away from cargo, but is free and really gives you wings.
Eventually, I did get away from that starter system LHS 4337 (IIRC), and sort of hung out in a few other areas for a while. Best thing I ever did.
Once I figured out what kind of play suited my interests best (mining), I deliberately sought systems with nice quality rings so I could focus. Bonus points on that system if it also had a station or outpost near (or at!) the planet ring I was mining.

The only thing i can suggest for starting off is to visit the elite dangerous commanders thread here at SimHQ and add all our names.
Most of us have decent jump capability and some are happy to travel hundreds of light years to meet up to co-op with you.
So friend away and if i see you online, i will be happy to travel to you and join up.
Oohh, as soln as you get in game, get away from spawn areas. Pick any direction and go.
Fighterops...
The only TRUE Stealth crowd funded game.
Devs said there was stuff there, but you just couldn't see it.

Pick a high tech station to park your stuff at. That way you can upgrade them there as well.
I have most of my ships on one place, then maybe my trader or miner left at their own "home" systems.

Hey Beans, CMDR NAME THREAD Welcome to the show! My CMDR Name is Behemoth the Cat. Look forward to seeing out there. Have fun and refuel... Often, ask many questions, and seek out the Rook or the Ice, and soon myself, but I'm lacking in fundage to help very much, right now. -B
