Friend in Germany coming to visit us for Thanksgiving.

He is flying from Germany to NYC JFK to DFW.

At JFK he is disembarking his European airline flight and getting on an American carrier flight that will bring him to DFW.

He has a 2 hours and 40 min layover at JFK before the JFK to DFW flight leaves.

Will he be going through customs and passport check at JFK before getting on the American carrier or will he do that after he arrives in DFW?

We are trying to ascertain how much time to give him when he arrives in DFW.

If he is doing the customs and passport check part here, the international arrival terminal here at DFW international airport is known to be slow sometimes and may take a couple of hours.

Thanks!

p.s I am surprised that there are no direct non-stop flight from Germany to DFW.

They were either 1 stop going through JFK or Boston or Heathrow or even Madrid and Miami or 2 stops.

There was a flight that was operated by Canada Airline but the plane had Lufthansa or KLM airline marking and it stopped in Toronto and then Philadelphia (or was it Atlanta) before landing in DFW.

That made no sense to me. Going out of the way away from the destination.

Look at the map and see if the carriers use the same terminal. (Lufthansa appears to arrive at Terminal 1). If he departs from a different terminal, I'd say he will go through U.S. Immigration before getting out of terminal 1.

Your friend will need to go through Immigration at JFK and claim his baggage from the atlantic flight before checking in for the domestic flight from JFK to DFW.

Thanks.

I rather he takes care of that at JFK.

I went to pick up my parents one time at the international terminal here at DFW and it took 5 hours after the landed before they exited the double custom doors.

Last time I flew through JFK I had to go through customs and immigration before getting my onward connection, my flight had been delayed and I had missed my connection, so the airline put us up in some hotel or other and then a nice business class connection onwards only 12 hours late smile

Usually it is the first point of landing in a new country that you have to go through customs.

At least they were nice enough to put you in a hotel.

I remember one time flying out of Miami our flight was delayed by 13 hours. We didn't leave until 3 am - stuck in the secure area of the terminal.

They gave us a voucher for $20 worth of airport food in the secured area, a couple of bottles of drinking water, a $50 voucher good toward the next flight on the same airline, and a transportation voucher for free taxi to anywhere we wanted to go once we arrived at our destination.

The 2 stewardesses on our flight were cute: both were tall and blonde. They looked like models. The plane was only 1/3 full. Them stewardesses didn't even give us a free personal tour of the mile high club for what we had to go through for 13 hours.

Must have been 40 years ago if they had Stewardesses and 45 years ago if they looked like models.

It was in 2010.

wink

I am old fashioned.

I still refer to them as stewardesses instead of flight attendants.

Same way I refer to servers as waitresses.

Tell him to copy the other passengers. Also, there's no way he can get lost because the airport people make sure there's only one path from one plane to Immigration (to prevent people from skipping it).

Also, it won't work this way on the return trip. Bags are sent directly to Germany. What I mean is, he will not have to go claim his baggage when he's flying DFW->JFK before getting on the flight to Germany.

It happened to me the first time: baggage claim is outside the secure area. Once I learned that my bags were being shipped with out my intervention I had to run through security again and barely made it to my gate. smile

One of the times I was flying back from Toronto was just a day after the shoe bomber was caught, everyone was bare foot and if you had the slightest tan you got pulled out of line for a more thorough search. The first time I flew into Toronto it was a much more relaxed atmosphere, the only thing we had to do was walk through a bath of bleach to kill off any chance of Foot and Mouth disease being spread.

Ah, it was good to get away from the stench of barbequed beef that hung over the UK at the time wink

My next trip over was due to be 14/Sept/2001, and on the 11th I was driving back up to Glasgow making arrangements to be picked up from the airport in Toronto. When I closed the call and put the radio back on there was the news article about an aircraft hitting the twin towers.

You can still get a job as a pencil pusher administrator there!

Do you still get your fancy shoes touched up by the shoe-shine boys too?

I only wear athletic shoes when I am not at work and steel toe boots when I am at work.

Can't remember the last time I wore dress shoes and I have never gotten the boots shined.

How do websites like this one get live by minute updated information:

https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAL1454

A few min ago was at the gate and then delayed by 20 min and then pushed from gate.
