I usually fly with German or British campaign pilots but my current one is French. When I fired up WOFF today the photo on the first screen included this plane.

What kind of plane is this? What really confuses me is: where is the engine? Is that the top of a prop that I see jutting above the upper wing (between the pilot and the gunner)?

It was the SPAD A.2. The engine is in front of the pilot.

I've always wondered how many of the designers ever went for a ride in one?

You had a British version also based off the Be2 airframe that was nicknamed "The Pulpit" for fairly obvious reasons.
The book "Wind in the Wires" has quite the humorous paragraph about what the pilots (let alone the observers!) thought about this machine.
Great book. Highly recommended.

I like how dirty the plane is in the background of the first picture.

Very interesting. Thanks for the info everyone.

Riding up front looks like it would be unnerving. The upper support braces in JFM's first photo look remarkably thin to me.

Plus how in the world are you not permanently deaf after that? Inches from a propeller?
