I think the last time I played Falcon 4.0 it was plain old 1.08.Wow,this is such an improvement it's beyond belief. Now I'm thinking I may well have to go get the GoG version after all.

One question Retro, when I try to use the torrent to download the pack it doesn't work.
Like it's not a torrent file.

What do you use to download it?

Nevermind I'm an idiot.

Hm I used uTorrent and it worked fine. Just be sure you don't install any of the adware that's bundled with the uTorrent installer nowadays :/

The narrator said something like 'in three to four weeks'...

Why couldn't he have said 'two'?

Seriously, this looks pretty special.

It's awesome, took a quick flight and grabbed some pics:

I have one problem though. The launcher will crash on startup if it's set to 64-bit platform. When I changed it to 32-bit it worked OK. I have Win7 64-bit.

Well, I took a little flight too and needless to say that I know what I'm flying for the coming months and more... This new BMS is a real achievement!

@Damson did you try to download the archive again ? Could be some corrupted files.

Thanks for the update, Retro! Might give this one a try again.

Downloaded and took a quick test flight...awesome!

I like how they kept the original music in the menus and campaign planning area...brings me back to the 90's when flying a sim in single player was immersive and exciting.

Can't wait to dive into this more!

With the never declining efforts of Snail (I bet) one may enjoy a very well done JA 37, here with adjusted textures.

Note that the pilot has "correct" arm patch.

I don't get it... If the trailer says it isn't out yet, then how are you guys already downloading?

Wow, I can't believe how far (and how long) F4 has come. I don't think there will ever be another sim like it.

@Damson did you try to download the archive again ? Could be some corrupted files.

The download has to be OK as it would give CRC error while decompressing the zip file, and the integrity of the install files is checked right before the install by the installer itself. But I did the complete reinstall and tried -nomovie and -window commands on the executable but it still crashes with 64-bit platform mode.

I can still fly with the 32-bit but I wonder what I'm missing with it.

As this is screenshot section lets drop some pics with carrier ops:

I found the solution - I ended the BTTray.exe (Bluetooth) process in Task manager processes tab and the 64-bit exe works. I've got crash after ending the mission in a campaign though. Don't know if this correlated?

Oh my...Balkans and Israel are campaign ready now?

The wife is not going to be happy at all...lol.

Nice screens everyone!

Just as a side note...in BMS if you push "Shift-Prnt screen" it makes a "pretty" screenshot...that's actually what they call it in the config.

It removes the info bar etc. for the screenshot.

I forgot that F4 had a dynamic campaign.Does DCS have one? I never really got into that one,it left me cold.

Also,I retrieved my trusty Logitech 3D Pro from the bottom of the cupboard to re-visit F4 but it's spiking really badly, especially on the rudder.Time for a new stick I think,I just don't want a HOTAS.No room and too expensive.

Looks great!

The only thing that spoilt the launch trailer was the oh so cheesy voice intro.... god I cringed!

I remember playing this a long way back... some fantastic improvements in there now!

They added trees and got rid of the 90's LEGO terrain? Bout damn time biggrin

Well, it is a great improvement, but still not perfect.

Low level flying breaks the illusion a bit when you see all the flat painted buildings. Hopefully someday an smart autogen for 3D houses and buildings can be added.

Anyone seen a non-torrent link for the Israeli Theatre?

it is absolutely stunning what the BMS-guys get out of the old classic...

Decided to have a look back into falcon but tons of trouble remembering how this jet stuff all works.. hence the not too glorious atempt at instant action.. but it is definatly fun!

If there was a DCS quality Multi-role bird available, and Hormez was out, I'd say the 1.5 update would have put DCS back in the lead.

But frankly, I'm now ready to drink deeply from the BMS Kool-aide.

It does show it's age in spots, but the Auto-gen trees are what pushed me over the Edge (pun so very intended!). It feels great when you get down at tree top leve, and there's just so many toys to play with.

Plus exporting gauges and MFDs is painless, at least compared to DCS.

I totally hear you. For the longest time i thought DCS was the way forward, but now it is BMS or bust. Did my first ramp start last night, and it was awesome. Was in a campaign, and the sounds were amazing, hearing F-15 and F-16's taking off, taxi, etc. As far as graphics go, i am very happy with the way things are at the moment, because i get 50 to 75 fps. Any more eye candy and i don't think my pc could handle it. But it is really good looking the way it is.

This is the perfect balance imo.

I think at this point BMS is so far ahead DCS will never catch up. To even be considered on par with BMS they need a robust DC (good luck), more theaters, more a/c, better netcode, dedicated server, etc. All BMS has to do is release more study sim level a/c (not easy) and everything else is in place. And, it is free.

Well, there's always visuals... and down low, I'd still rather have DCS (or even LOMAC) than BMS. If they manage to get autogen-buildings and other low-terrain stuff, if they implement ground vehicles on the detail leve of DCS... then we're talking.

But of course this is all relative since the F-16 very often operates up high, whereas DCS was started with a helo and an A-10.

What I'm seeing of BMS is getting me thinking about a PC upgrade.

I find perfectly sunny 12 o'clock noon screenshots kinda boring, no matter how detailed the graphics are or pretty the explosion. I prefer flying in crud and/or darkness, much more exciting to me.

My all-time favorite aircraft video has it all (MiG-29s)...

Man, BMS is looking very nice indeed. Maybe one day we'll fly Norwegian F-16s on EF2000's map with a similar campaign, chasing the Russians through the fjords (I can dream)...

The visuals in BMS 4.33 are very good and many of the vehicles including the ships, trucks and SAMs have new 3d models. Even the ocean has a animated texture now.

I would certainly love to have a Norway scenery for F4! I actually recently flew myself in the same place as your first video (though unfortunately not in an F-16). Here's a video from my flight:

Just think about doing low level flying in F4 through that scenery!

Yeah arneh, that was awesome (I think I've watched it multiple times already)!

++++++++++

OT: Quick question...I don't know if you still work on EECH, but would you have preferred to work with C++ (classes, virtual functions, etc.) vs. plain C? And did you guys ever get EECH to compile from a Visual IDE or were you still using Watcom? Thanks.

Haven't worked on EECH for many years, though others have taken over. C++ would have been preferable, especially compared to the pseudo class-like system Razorwork made in C. That was very error-prone to make changes with.
I think it compiles in Visual C++, but that doesn't really change much by itself.

Thanks for the insight, arneh. I get the textbook understanding of objects and class encapsulation, I just don't like using it, too much forethought and constant referencing to be enjoyable. It warms my heart to know that at least one professional flight sim developer with a well loved game must have felt the same way. smile

Grabbing the Israeli Campaign now...

For stock BMS, which of the additional aircraft would you guys say is implemented best?

I was hoping the Harrier might be the simplest to learn, just for some standard CCIP CAS and such...
