So I recently decided to brush off my TX and break out the micro birds. And then today Horizon Hobby goes and announces these two bad boys: A 19" P-47 Razerback with a flight stabilizing Gyro and Brushless power for only $130! http://www.horizonhobby.com/umx-p-47-bl-bnf-basic-eflu3250And a Micro Collective Pitch Flybarless Heli capable of Full 3D aerobatics AND 'beginner' modes including full on 'panic recovery' that auto levels at the flip of a switch. For $100! (Or $130 if you don't have your own TX) We are truly living in the golden age of RC: I just paid $240 for both a full house Warbird and hyper advanced Collective pitch 3D capable Heli that I can fly in my back yard (or the parking lot at work!). Only downside is these are pre-orders. Now we play the waiting game...

Very cool - can't wait for the report on how well they fly!

So the P-47 Arrived last week (ahead of the Heli, essentially switching the ETA for each item), just in time for the noreaster that blew through But, today saw a beautiful, calm, crisp fall morning, perfect for a maiden test flight! As requested, here's my flight report (as I posted on RCG): Finally got my maiden in this morning!
To those who don't have this plane yet, believe the prolific hype! She's not a warbird, she's a sport plane dressed like one, which is very much a good thing: as others have said, she fasts well, she slows pretty well. Not quite as comfortable in slow speed flight as the Cub S, but she'll do it, and she lands herself like the cub.
Funny enough, I dinged the first few landings because I tried to treat her like a warbird; power on and giving her some flare at the last minute for a 3-pointer.
Nope! She'll balloon and come down on her nose! Just line her up on final, cut power, and she'll grease herself in. She autolands pretty much just like the cub, which is quite the accomplishment.
That is, after I got her trimmed. I'm pretty sure I'm the only one using the "recommended" 200mah 2 cell from HH, because she's still a tad tail heavy with the batt full forward. HH probably just figures you're all using babbel bats anyway
I do think a few more packs are in order, but not sure about 3-cell. She pulled pretty hard on the 'stock' 2 cell, so a higher C/mAH 2 cell will likely do the trick for me.
I flew my UMX PT-17 right after that, and bounced the first few landings (man, that's a forgiving plane at all scales!) because Ironically, she DOES need a bit of power to land smoothly.
That said, unfortunately, I'm not sure the parking lot where I work has a big enough 'box' to keep the Jug happy. I'm basically flying in a parking lot boxed in by trees, the equivalent of a small gym with cross winds. Getting her trimmed was a PITA because I didn't have enough room to stretch her out at 80%+ throttle before I needed to be back on the sticks for a turn. In general, it has a higher stress-to-fun ratio than I'd like. Not the Jugs fault, as she does do slow just fine, but it does mean she's more or less relegated to weekend baseball field patrols. lots of other reports in the RCG thread! http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2489190&page=55

Wow. I just looked up a video on the UMX PT-17! That looks like a fun plane! How do you like yours?
Almost 10 years ago, shortly after I got my first RC plane (a Hobbyzone Firebird Commander II for Christmas), I stopped by a local RC flying spot that was recommended by my LHS. There were all kinds of things in the air, but the one that caught my attention the most and ultimately became my obsession for a few months, was a small, slow flying PT-17. The old guy flying it was doing some mild aerobatics and touch and goes there in the late afternoon with the sun setting and I wanted one immediately. I could never find one for sale anywhere. I eventually found out it may have been a Robbe model, but that was discontinued. I ended up settling for a GWS Tiger Moth 400 instead, which was a fun plane, but the looks/lines of it still fall short of the PT-17. After a few months I ended up getting a GWS PT-17, but it needed a lot of work to look even remotely scale, and needed so much nose weight that it flew like a bit of a pig. I sold it after few years.
I eventually bought a second Tiger Moth after the first one died a glorious RC plane death. I still have the second TM in the closet...

the Stearman is a great plane, but I need to find a way to crank up the roll rate, as I've yet to get her inverted due to such a slow roll rate. (I'm even debating a quad aileron mod.)
Other than that, She looks really good in the air, and is a docile flyer. She was somewhat tail heavy out of the box, but a larger/higher output battery and some trim helped that.
Some also think she's under-powered, but considering a full-scale -17 only had about 200 HP, I think she flies very scale. It takes some energy management to do more aggressive maneuvers, but my 1 cell packs are also a bit old, so a fresher batt might also perk her up.

(Prepare for thread necro...)
So I sold off a lot of my old RC stuff, bought a spectrum radio, and my wife bought me a UMX stearman for Christmas.
I've only flown it a couple of times, but it's a pretty fun little plane. Can fly in a really small space and very stable in a light breeze. Getting used to the stabelization technology is interesting - sometimes I fell like I'm fighting it a little when I try to make small corrections.
Will try and get video at some point, or maybe even just some pics. It's amazing how small it looks compared to my GWS Corsair!
