There's always room for improvement no matter if it is better than 90% of the rest of the world.

The statistic he rattled off that stuck out the most was the 55,000 deaths in cars. We are driving more miles than ever but that statistic has fallen immensely. All the way to 1980 we were annually losing 45,000 to 50,000 people on the highways.

Seat belts and air bags help, but also a couple of generations that have accepted them.
I like the part about easy answers, buying stuff with a card and easy communication by phone.

It is good that there are seat belts and airbags with all the dependence on technology installed in vehicles instead of SA to avoid being in an accident.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

One of my many pet peeves while driving, people who tailgate so close that when the car in front of them slows for a right-hand turn they have nowhere to go except across the double yellow into the oncoming lane. Or who just do it consciously instead of slowing the F down and waiting for the obstruction in THEIR lane to move.

Anyone who drives so close they can't slow their own car down, or for that matter can't tell the car in front of them is slowing to make a turn (most people are pretty transparent in telegraphing their intentions as long as they're not using their phone), is a miserable driver.

The most important thing is to take in what all the cars around you are doing and are most likely to do next. When you KNOW that car in the other lane is going to be stupid and come into the right lane to make a left turn (because his Camry is really an 18 wheeler and needs to make WIDE turns), it doesn't take you by surprise, it just makes you shake your head in wonder.

It also doesn't help when you have drivers who slow down to 1 mph to make a turn into a shopping center or other business. They act as if their car will roll over and combust into a fireball if they make a turn while going 10 mph.

I dread teaching my 14 yr old to drive in a few years, right now he can't get his head out of his phone so he's not paying attention to what goes on when on the road. After having been hit twice on motorcycles in my teens when I was young and thought just because I had the right away people would stop, I tend to always think "what could that car do" when I'm driving.

I'd rather yield even if I have the right of way than get in an accident.

Yeah, especially if you're on a bike! Not much consolation to know you are in the right when you're in traction...

Mmmm...

Was interesting to read the following comments from original post, albeit focusing on driving statistics.

Funnily enough RK, I understood the whole message.
Being taught the same value's when I was about that age helped to shape my worth and self standard within society.

I was never perfect, nor, intended to be ... that's growing up.

However, my young Son has and always will be, taught the same morals-principles-values ... So help him God.

For if he fails in this, God has no chance of saving him if I find out!!

Interesting, the substantial drop in the last five years.
I wonder if that's a reflection of a much higher percentage
of the fleet having airbags, or would it be to do with the
young people doing much less driving these days. I wonder
if statistics are kept on that...

I found this:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonkb...riving-anymore/

Looks like young people are getting into fewer accidents
(and young driver accidents yield a majority of fatalities)
because they are driving less.

Too bad it isn't bringing insurance rates down! If/when we put my son in our Honda when he gets his license, it goes from $70/mo to $230/mo AFTER discounts.

For the clip, the parts I liked were how they say
"kids are in a hurry" (kids today want what they're parents have without putting in a few decades of work, education and maturity)
"flip a dial--instant entertainment" (streaming video, digital photos, watching tv in the car, video games on your person at all times)
"instant communication" (cell phones, texting, social media)
"flash a card, instant money" (gift cards, growing up around over use of credit cards...most kids don't understand the concept of saving)
"shove in a problem, push a few buttons...instant answers" (kids today don't know how to look up anything in books and to FIND answers for themselves, just how to google it)
"tell me how to wipe out prejudice" (we're still surrounded by it, politics becomes prejudice as "liberal" and "conservative" become accusations, ignorance putting religion vs religion as well as race)
"your rights aren't any better than his" (if only people understood that one!)

Dark Ages/Medieval version:

Didn't have movable type, and all our books were hand copied (and it was usually the Bible).
Quarantines for the Black Death which swept through because of all the witches, gypsies, and Jews (most are gone now).
Doctors didn't know to let the bad blood out.
Way too many knights rampaging the countryside without a code of Chivalry.
Freedom of religion wasn't allowed as there were many pagans not worshiping The Church. And Muslims! They controlled a huge chunk of Europe, from Spain to Sicily and laid siege to Vienna. Today all people are free to be just Christians.

Yes, we used to have to train for years with the longbow before being able to kill Frenchmen. You kids today spend a week training to pour a black powder into a tube and it's then as quick as pulling a trigger.

At that time the longbow was probably more accurate though.

That's because the millimeter-wavelength FCR enables fire-and-forget attacks on Frenchmen without LOS, it's the best part of the Longbow.
