Just got back from seeing this and I thought it was fantastic. This film has a very similar vibe to that of "Apollo 13" so if you liked that movie you should like this one as well. I also didn't think Kristen Wiig could pull of a dramatic role but she did.

Watched it yesterday in 3D, loved every minute of it. Particularly appreciated the absence of stuff-flying-into-your-face effects that are so popular with most 3D movies.
Yes, the book is better, doing a fantastic job at revealing the difficulties he faces and his solutions. Probably a little too geeky for general public anyways.

Excellent movie.

Cheers,
Slug

Alas, looks like it's not in Chinese cinemas. But I keep hoping - sometimes they run a bit behind.

That surprises me since China plays a pivotal role in the film!

Don't know when the release date for The Martian is here in Belgium, been checking my local cinema and it is not on their list for the next few months.
frown

Edit: found it with a little more digging, 7th October it goes on general release here.

Edit2: Still no date as to when it will be shown in the local cinema tho.

Loved the book (finished it in 2 days), and looking forward to seeing the movie this week. I'm guessing not all of the more nerdy engineer bits will make it to the screen, which is sad but understandable. Also still not sure how I feel about Troy from Community playing Rich Purnell- wasn't how I pictured him at all in the book, but that's because I know a couple of aerodynamicists.

Having said that, I'm gonna go listen to some Childish Gambino albums to get ready for the movie (I hope somebody here is young enough to get that reference wink ).

I haven't read the book but compared to the majority of Hollywood films, "The Martian" had quite a lot of nerdy techspeak in it. At least enough to satisfy any fan of ST: TNG.

The book is well worth the read, it is one of those page turners that you cannot put down. Lots of techy detail told in quite a witty narration

It's hard to cast every role like they were described in a book.

Hardcore Science Fiction is not very popular in China, and I don't think that China was involved in the production of the movie like with, for example, the last Iron Man movie (which even had an extra scene only for the Chinese market, apparently).
Edit... Iron Man can be seen as SciFi, but I think the general idea is more that it's a superhero movie - which usually is more OK over here.

More proof of bias in Hollywood- that they can't rustle up enough nerdy types to play all the anti-social engineers in the book.

wink

I understand. Superhero/comic book movies often have scifi elements in them but they really are "scifi lite" as a genre. They are in a totally different category from what we would call traditional hardcore scifi such as Dune, 2001, The Andromeda Strain, Foundation, etc.

My Chinese friends are all into Star Trek, more so the original series than the new re-interpretation, but they got there by way of Benedict Cumberbatch

They are always quoting things said by William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy

LOL. I thought that was one of the most unbelievable parts of the movie, applying duct tape while wearing gloves? THAT is science fiction!
