we had a dachshund when I was a kid and she routinely ran adult bears off when we camped in the smokies. our silly white Persian cat thought she was the bear's match too, and would charge them.

There's something with big animals vs small ones... I don't know if they don't know how to react to those little suckers, or what, but it's pretty common to see small dogs scare the #%&*$# out of big ones.
Our chihuahua size thingie-dog-wannabe once chased a big ass, vicious looking German Shepard. Don't know why he didn't just eat the thing, but he just ran crying like a little girl! I guess it was the surprise?
When you're feeling sad, just remember that somewhere in the world, there's someone pushing a door that says "pull".

That dog's kayak was totally saved.

the dog, or most any animal that is there first gets the territorial advantage. I think the bear got first dibs on the kayak, and thus she could not run him off without more self confidence, but as the bear approached her, it was entering her territory and easier to back down. We have a momma bear with three cubs, born this spring who frequently hang out in our yard and the cubs approach me and mill around with no aggression, just curiosity, while momma just watches from a distance. I never approach them, but when they come near me I feel safe in standing there and talking to them, I Never feed them!
