German re-unification.

The German Democratic Republic (DDR) ceased to exist and the Federal Republic of Germany (BRD) got 5 new federal states and 17 million new citizens. It wasn't easy for both sides to adapt to the new situation but all in all I think this amazing quasi-experiment is nothing short of a small miracle with hardly a historical equivalent. It turned out to be much more difficult and would take far longer than most people imagined in 1990 but slowly Germany is indeed becoming one nation.

But if a guy from Swabia (yours truly) and a girl from Thuringia (she_who_must_be_obeyed) can make it work so can the rest of Germany. biggrin

That's a great achievement , and in the natural flow of History ! Seems 'Preussen' has some good aspects for a Southern German.

I would love to see the same happen with North / South Korea, but beleive that would be a much tougher situation.

Ha! Don't ever tell that to a Bavarian. Or a Swabian. Or any 'non-Prussian'. hahaha

Indeed. I remember South Korean government officials actually visiting Germany to learn about Germany's experiences with a project of such magnitude. But then even during the high-time of the cold war East Germany was never as isolated from the Western world as North Korea.

Germany reunified on my 18th birthday so it's an event I won't ever forget. I remember watching CNN that day when the news broke about the reunification being made official. We also had Desert Shield going on at the same time so it was definitely a busy news season.

I celebrated German Unity Day at work yesterday. I changed my wallpaper background to the German flag, I actually wore black, red and yellow (don't have a gold shirt) as my work attire. lol

I also brought in some German snacks from Aldi.

I'm thinking that Saghen has German family ties? Either that or he's a really enthusiastic fan of Germany. Lol

Congrats, Germany!

I'm wearing my very vintage "Berlin - The Divided City" sweatshirt today to remember what was achieved.

Plus, no more freezing our butts off at the Fulda Gap!

I guess a possible US equivalent would be a guy from Massachussetts hooking up with a girl from Arkansas.

I wonder what Germany would look like today if we had gone through with the Morgenthau plan.

NK has also been isolated a lot longer than E Germany was.
It will be a lot harder when/if they ever reunify, and given all the things they have issues with that weren't issues in the GDR (no one there thought they had a godlike supreme leader for one), it will take a LOT longer.

Congrats Germany. Last time I was there it was a divided country.
And the East would not allow their citizens to leave to visit West Germany.
'Freedom' for humans, is a hard thing to find, even harder to keep.
Good luck on the future also.

I took a furlough when I was stationed in Sicily, a few of us went to Munich and Austria to ski the Alps.
Found the people there to be strong, and friendly. We had a great time.
Don't know what it would be like now.
Never met anyone from 'East' Germany, but a lot of Germans were skiing in Austria.

'Things', and people have changed.
For the better in Germany, IMHO.
Glad to see a country whole again.
United, is always stronger.
