Hi;
I seem to recall that the original Vietcong by Pterodon and the 'fist alpha' addon doesn't work on Win 7; does anybody know if that issue has been resolved yet? More importantly, does anybody know how to get the game running on Win7?

Thanks ahead of time.

I was just messing around this weekend, trying to see if I could get it to run on W10. Time to try this.

Thanks!

Great post. Thanks for info. I recently pulled out Vietcong and Fist Alpha to see if I could play them again.

Let me know how it goes for you; if it works, I will try to copy you. Vietcong is one of my favorite FPS games-except for all that 'tunnel crawling' that is.

I'm playing Black Mesa right now, Half Life 1 updated to look like Half Life 2. This is an old shooter!

Oldest I've played recently was Thief: The Dark Project from 1998 I believe? No updates, just vanilla off Steam. Graphics were primitive as can be but the gameplay still held up.

I went back and played Vietcong a few years ago just to make sure it wasn't all just nostalgia.

Nope, it really was that good. The mechanics were well ahead of their time. Driving, open maps (most of them to some degree), the way you would automatically conform to the height of your cover when you aimed down the sights, great story telling and character development.

I'm still waiting for someone to make a true successor to games like Vietcong and H&D2 but I may be waiting forever.

NickM did you get that PM message I sent you some time ago? I think I put some information and links there that might help. I'm not sure about Windows 10 but I have Vietcong working just fine on Windows 7. Unfortunately I can't get Mafia to run. Game installed like a champ but I get an error when trying to launch. I have not tried installed Fist Alpha but will do so at some point.

I would love if Warhorse Studios could acquire the Mafia/Vietcong/Hidden and Dangerous IPs. Some of the guys who created those games work for and run Warhorse now. That seems perhaps a large task to get them away from 2K Games, especially the Mafia brand. I don't think they did it justice at all with the release of Mafia 3 so maybe they'd be willing to part with it and put it back into better hands? I guess the next best thing would be if Warhorse created new IPs with the expressed purpose that they would be a direct, spiritual successor to H&D and Vietcong and even Mafia. And everyone in the know and passing the news along to the community that their coveted Hidden and Dangerous 3 can be found over hear under this name now. cool

Dangit I just checked my PMs and I think I deleted it to make room. I recall typing quite a bit of info in it too with links but I don't remember now what all that was. dizzy

I believe I used patch v1.01 which I have if you need. I'm not sure where I got it but it should be somewhere.(Maybe ModDB)

I'm pretty sure I used this tool though that someone created called "Vietcong Starter". Hopefully it will help you to launch it in Windows 10 and it lets you configure certain things even support for widescreen I believe.

http://www.moddb.com/games/vietcong/downloads/vietcong-starter-1651

I'm not sure if it can also be used for Fist Alpha but its probably worth a shot. I still haven't installed it yet myself.

I have Viet Cong and First Alpha running fine but that's in Win 7 64..That's the main reason I tried and uninstalled Win 10 ,,Takes a lot of work to get some older titles to run and some just won't run at all..Went back to a factory restore of win 7..I don't like jumping through hoops to get my older games to run and I own mostly older combat games and haven't bought any newer ones

I got the 1.65.1 starter (and I am waiting for it to get updated to 1.70) and FINALLY it works! BUT...it is kind of laggy/stuttery;

So....what to do next to smooth things out?

What are your specs NickM? I may jump into Vietcong to remind myself where I have the settings and what I have set in Nvidia Control Panel.

I'm sorry Nick I don't know much about that hardware. It does seem like though a better graphics card with more onboard memory would probably make a significant difference in performance. I usually try doing things like forcing vertical sync and tripple buffering in your graphic card's control panel if it has it and also try turning on a frame rate limiter. Are you okay with perhaps a 30fps cap but with consistency and minimal stutter? Nvidia has an option called "Pre-rendered Frames." Sometimes setting that to a different value can remove stutter in some games.(It does so for Witcher 2 for some reason) I have a feeling though a better graphics card would do wonders.

NickM I'm not sure what exactly you would need. I'm not familiar with AMD stuff and I'm not too tech savvy. Try asking in the Hardware forums for a tweaking tool for an AMD card. I don't know if D3DOverrider supports your card or will work but its worth a try..

https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/84-d3doverrider/

Maybe MSI Afterburner is better? Seems to support any video card manufacturer.

If you right click on your desktop a box opens in it is listed Catalylist Control Center that's the settings for your AMD card open that and it should tell you what card you have,,,I'm willing to bet you have an on board video chip.If it's Win 10 unless you specifically looked for it most computers have on board chips
.. I had an AMD 4200HD on board chip before and games ran crappy...A friend gave me a Nvidia 5600 TI video card I installed that and my gaming took off,,But you really need to find out what hardware you're packing before anyone can give you informed help...In win 7 I go to control panel--->System and then there is a system panel that lists ram processor etc,,One other question is this a laptop or desktop?????

Go here to find out how to get your system specs
http://www.simplehow.tips/a/44/how-to-view-system-information-on-windows10
And click on the start button and look for an AMD entry for your video card and open it and see whats there..It's hard offering advice unless we know what your machine has hardware advice

I don't seem to have that in my start menu but I sussed out the following info from my control panel:

Intel (R) Core (TM)2 Duo CPU E6750 @2.66 GHz 2.66GHz
4.00 GB of RAM
32-bit Operating System, x64-based processor

Win10 Pro, 32 bit OS

In the graphics adapter portion I found this:

The Graphics card has the following info:
Driver version 8.970.100.9001

I don't know if any of that helps

Go to control panel--System and get to device manager and click on your video card and it will give you the model.....from the start button search for Device manager and click on it..I figure you have an on board video chip...

Good show Nick Looked it up in Google it's not an on board chip but a pci-e card which is a lot better...I had an on board hd 4200 chip and gaming sucked added an NVIDIA card and the frame rates went way up
Here's a review of your card https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/

i went to the ATI site http://support.amd.com/en-us/download
and on the right entered in your card but no win 10 showed up,,,On the left there's an auto detect feature to find the right drivers for your card You are using an 8.970.100.9001,,, That is a real old drivers ,,Ati drivers are now up around the 13.xxxxxx Series ,,,You need a driver up date,,,,Learn how to use google or what ever search engine your browser has and type in simple questions and read a bit,,,You need to get the drivers right for the card and then start tweaking the game..Your system exceeds the required specs,,,
Two things do you have compatibility mode set to Win XP????? Right click on VC Starter __>properties__> compatibility tab set to XP service pack 2,,,Then see what version you have mine is 1.60 Patches are here http://www.vietcong.info/portal/downloads.php?cat_id=7..

Seems like a lot of work but take your time ...Took me awhile to get it running in Win 7 older games are tough to set up in Win 10 I had a bunch that wouldn't run in W 10 so went back to W 7

Well I happen to have 1.65.1 & I can't seem to find the compatibility tab in properties;

Also: I am trying to figure out how to install the 1.70 beta but there are no instructions.

No joy when it comes to VC...so, that's OK for now. I'm sure it will show up on GOG one of these days.

Now...do you know anything about how to install the 1.70 Beta?
