Anyone built a sim pit using aluminum stringers, formers and skin like a real aircraft?

I think the cost would be prohibitive, at least in the UK.

I did make my ribs out of MDF and fitted ally rivets every inch before painting. I then put a dab of silver paint on some and on the corners to make it look like they were aluminium. Skin was thin plywood, but again had rivets or screws in it to make it look like a proper skin.

There's a builder over at viperpits.org that has built an F-16 cockpit entirely out of aluminum. It looks AMAZING. I just wish I still had the link. frown

My idea:

Fore and aft ends are 36" dia 3/4" plywood. Floor and support also of wood (3/4" ply floor, 2*4 supports).

Aluminum 3/4" angle running lengthwise, covered by .032" aluminum skin. Port side shifted aft to reveal interior.

Upper angle on each side would probably need to be steel rather than aluminum in order to beef up the structure some.

Seat structure, interior bulkheads made of ply (shown tan here for clarity, all interior would actually be painted chromate green).

Real basic but I think it gives more of an aircraft feel than all wood construction.

Looks like that could work well. I know that a number of the racing sim folks like to make pits out of aluminium like this:

I've made my "pit" out of extruded aluminium similar to what some racing simmers do. It doesn't look as impressive as some pits I've seen here and there but it works well. I have no place like a Garage or a Garden to work at and I didn't want to do everything in the living room, thats why I choosed to go the route with getting already cut to length materials. Still feels better than sitting infront of a Desk.
