Blaming tongue cancer on going down on the ladies?! What a douchebag. (no pun intended)

Or maybe just really poor choice in women? ...

http://www.esquire.com/entertainment/music/news/a37639/iron-maiden-bruce-dickinson-tongue-cancer/

There seems to be a sparkle of truth in his argument but if it were true, so many other rock stars would've gone down for the same reason. (again, no pun intended)

Well, didn't Michael Douglas had throat cancer and then admitted it was tongue cancer and it was blamed on the same cause?

I know of something the other way around. Girlfriends getting UTI. Never had that happen again once I started making sure to brush/mouthwash beforehand and making sure the "scene of the crime" was washed afterward. At the very least one or the other.

A bit vulgar of a post, but hey it's a PSA...

Everyone (I hope) does this with dates, but when you live together things can get, well....

Well, they say most women carry the HPV, and the mouth/throat seems like it could be a similar enough environment for the virus to do its thing.

Good oral hygiene would help lick that virus.

Doesn't using Listerine help?
What a great ad campaign they could have.

I don't see what's wrong with this claim.

Certain strains of HPV are well known to seriously increase the risk of cancer in women, it's not a far leap to say that if you contracted one of those strains of HPV in another location it may be at risk for cancer as well.

It's important to keep in mind that not EVERY strain of HPV is known to cause cancer which is why not every rock star's dealing with it.

BTW mouthwash, hygiene etc. aren't doing much to protect you from a virus. It only takes 1 or 2 virus particles to infect you, no matter how much you wash or rinse you're not going to get the entire area free of particles, and more particles will be shed from the skin during the act itself. Most likely if your partner has HPV you will contract it as well. The thing is, most people get HPV and then clear it from their systems without ever knowing they had it in the first place.

There are vaccines against HPV now, but AFAIK only given to girls (usually around age 11-12). I wonder if men should also be vaccinated...

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the universe is for it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more inexplicable.
There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

HPV 16 & 18 are indeed tied to a specific subset of oropharyngeal cancer. While this HPV strain is usually eliminated via adaptive immunity, when it lingers it can retard cellular tumor suppressor expression leading to malignancy. RoI is ~2/3 that of cervical cancer, majority being males. These two strains are also tied to several types of rectal and (rare) penile cancer.

Gardasil is actually gaining traction with males under age 26, especially teens <16. It targets HPV 6,11,16 & 18, the latter two being the most problematic for males, with the added benefit that a vaccinated individual ceases to be a viral vector.

Of course even if he was tested, and it was HPV+OPC, his lifestyle likely brought many risk factors with it. Drinking, smoking, weakened immunity from touring & partying, not to mention potential genetic predisposition and plain old bad luck all play their part.

*adding to what Longbow said, some studies have suggested as many as 80% of people have HPV at some point in their life, though most fall in the 50-60% range.

Gene Simmons had better be careful. What with that big tongue of his.

Used to see Dickinson on the national fencing circuit. People said he was a nice down to earth sort of chap; but a viscous bugger with a sabre in his hands. Never had a bout with him myself, me being an epeeist.

Never came across him either and sabre was my weapon of choice, however I did train with the European champ in Glasgow in the early 90s. Even managed to score some points off him too biggrin

Which should mean that you are relatively safe from the affliction that inspired this thread.

He was viscous? That explains how he got way up in there where the HPVs hide.

Haha! didn't see my typo there smile perhaps he is really a T-1000.

Alicat; I gave up competitive sabre in disgust and frustration due to the form degenerating in the senior competitions into 10 second rallies followed by 5 minutes arguing the legality of each hit. Teams such as Salle Ganchev were actively encouraged by their coaches to argue and intimidate judges/presidents.
electrification, with it's compromises of allowing flat hits and banning the fleche for example made me never wield a sabre again.

Still have my sabre but have not had a bout since the 90s. My original teacher was a Dutchman who was looking for a willing target... we became great friends over the years, now he lives in Scotland and I'm living close to the Dutch border smile

I started fencing in the late 70s and "found" my sabre in a shed, the blade was very good, the hilt was home made as was the guard which was a disaster, I replaced the guard with a nice shiny one from Leon Paul and ended up with a really well balanced sword, the blade is from Solingen and of really good quality, I still have it plus a couple of Leon Paul sabres and a foil. I've kind of "out grown" my jacket tho wink

One time I went back to my old club in Thurso, they had electrified their sabres and you had to hit hard enough to move the blade up or down within the hilt to activate a micro switch which then would allow the hit to register if you were touching a valid target, a flat hit would not activate the switch therefore not register a hit.
Those blades were by Leon Paul too, but I never liked them, the balance was all wrong on them. I think that was the last time I fenced.
