I thought this list was quite interesting. I've known for a long time that "Video Killed the Radio Star" was the debut video of the new network but I was surprised to see just how many of the videos in the list I've never heard of,

I knew quite a few and I think if you actually watched the videos on the list you don't think you know it would bring them back into your memory. Several of them aired quite heavily for quite some time.

How did I not know there was a video for "You Better You Bet" until just now.... well after having watching it I guess that's why.
My guess though for the larger number of unknown ones, I think if there was a list of video's for any given day, there probably would be more than we'd expect that we never heard of. Just for instance, Beavis and Butthead episodes were essentially half full of these kind of video's most hadn't heard of.

Wow that is a scary playlist of my uninitiated musical youth The weird thing seeing these sort of lists is the pure lack of Australian music we were listening to at the time..no Chisel or Angels or ACDC or Men at Work, Midnight Oil and so many others. You missed out on so much actual good home grown music scene as i imagine we over here in Oz missed of the rest of the worlds own home grown stuff that never made it internationally.
Sort of strange with music..a song may make it to number one world wide briefly whilst a home grown track or band can be in the charts twenty times as long as that single flash in the pan song, and be so much more loved but never break the boundaries of a country,

Yeah, I absolutely agree with your observation Ajay.
Looking at that playlist it's pretty obvious that Rod Stewart, Styx and REO Speedwagon were pretty popular at that time.

The list is just day one of MTV. Trust me, Men at Work and Midnight Oil got the crap played out of them later. AC/DC had a lot of videos later too.
I was a country boy when MTV started, so we still had the "farmer 5" channels and never had cable until I moved off of the farm when I joined the USAF in 1986. We literally had 5 TV channels...it was all our antenna could pick up. My music video memories came from late night "Friday Night Videos" on NBC.

Late 1982 I got my first Midnight Oil Album 10,9,8,7,... What an amazing band, I especially liked Scream In Blue and Tin Legs and Tin Mines. I finally got to see The Oils live in Portland in 1993 with Hothouse Flowers opening.
Guess who was the louder of the two bands?

Barmy OFFer in questionable standing, maybe collapsed in a corner?
All this time and I thought "Is It You" was from some group like the Commodores or the lead singer of Earth Wind and Fire. I never suspected Lee Ritenour.

My favorite video from MTV's opening day.

What a rush, On August 1st 1981 when MTV went live I was working for United Cable TV of Colorado in Denver. Was a warehouse man and delivered parts to all the campus`s around town. Was able to watch it all unfold live setting cable boxes all around town. Saw all those videos. Cable boxes have come along ways from those crappy ones.
I remember being at a record store with enough cash for only one album, was it going to be Paradise Theater or Hi Infidelity? Being a huge Styx fan I chose Paradise, but man I wanted them both, Hi Infidelity was such a good album!...
Best sound, weird (but nice) video...
