yep Wifey had a quote of almost $400 for fixing the upstream O2 sensor on her 2008 S40 Volvo, over $300 for the part!

I order the parts online and removed the old sensor on the manifold, was STUMPED by the wiring clip attachment until I googled it, and then installed the new sensor which i bought from an online parts store ($140). Disconected the battery, which clears codes, and cleaned the battery terminals too. Fired up the little beasty inline five and no check engine light.

Told her to go to town and come back with a 30packer of PBR, $19 at the newly constructed drive thru beer barn, and then drop it off and go drive some more. Over 60 miles on it now and still no check engine light.

If it passes inspection tomorrow morning she pays for the next WOFF addon. thumbsup

Mud......I finally figured out what that bloody "check engine" light means. It means I still have an engine....when somebody steals the engine, the light goes out!!!! Perfect.......

Most "modern" cars allow you to interrogate the CEL system through the odometer or other console displays, so you don't necessarily need a code reader, but I bought one from Harbor Freight for around $80. it's priceless to me. For all the work I have done on my '99 Cherokee, and '03 Odyssey it's made life a lit easier.

Good job bro, like Rick said, it's made working on cars a pleasure.

You earned that PBR!

Well done MW, always make a man feel good when he can actually fix something, and even better when his 'better half' recognizes the fact that he did.

OvS, I've interrogated a few CELs in my time using the odometer and it can work slick. Still, the old-fashioned ways can be satisfying too:

"Vas ist los?! Soooooo, zee CEL has decided to show itzelf, eh? Vell, vee have vays of dealing vis zis sort of zing. You vill tell us vat vee vant to know or you vill suffer zee consequences. Do I make myzelf clear? Now talk! Vhy are you on?!"

True, Jim, but in most of the US, lit bulb or not, the codes show up when you get it inspected, and then you have a large, threaded fastener running right through your middle parts!

MudWasp, move on down to Oklahoma. We don't have vehicle inspections, in my opinion, it's the only thing that Oklahoma does well. biggrin
