Usually if you go to donate blood they must test it. And, of course, give you the results. Plus you do good- which never hurts.

a free blood donation could be a solution (don't know how it works in the states)

Seems like we tested in high school, surely there are kits at a drug store? I don't know mine either. I asked at the doctor's office the other day while having blood drawn if they had my type on my record there, but she said no. Maybe it's on a larger record in the system, or I'd hope so. I need to donate and get in the habit. Kaa, isn't O+ the universal type?
edit: ok, O- is universal donor, O+ is universal recipient. Good for you!

I donated blood before but no one never told me what my blood type was.
I didn't know they were supposed to. if you have a donor number, just ask them ,they cannot do anything with your blood without knowing its type.

Wherever I donate blood they give me some paperwork afterward and a cookie or ice cream and the cookie or ice cream goes in my tummy and paperwork goes in the trash.

It's easy.
First get six shots glasses. And six small plates.
Then get powdered garlic, a small purple onion, six large black peppercorns (you can use regular ground table pepper but will have to do two of the test over. That means two more shot glasses or need to clean and dry two for reuse.), and some regular table salt.
Make a good slit in your thumb and begin filling shot glasses. When the thumb stops producing quick flowing blood you will have to "milk" it a bit. You may have to move on to some of your fingers. Hopefully you can fill the six shot glasses without having to slit your wrist for enough blood.
Each time below will require that you use a shot glass of blood and the ingredients below. You need the full shot glass so that the ratios are correct.
Then in a dish mix a pea size amount of each ingredient. From the onion cut a pea sized piece. Use one peppercorn or a half pea size amount of ground black pepper. Mix it around and crush the peppercorn and onion a bit with the round part of the spoon. When you have them mixed pour a shot glass of blood on the mixture. If it stays red you are A. Repeat it again but don't use the onion. After 30 seconds it stays red you are A+. If it doesn't stay red you are -.
Do the same but this time use twice as much salt. If it stays red you are B. Repeat it again but add twice the garlic. If it stays red you are B+. If after 30 seconds it turns black/purple you are -.
Do it again using the same but no salt at all. If it stays red you are O. Do it the same and use no salt or garlic. If it stays red you are O+. After 30 seconds it turns a coppery yellow/orange you are -.
Now, clean two of the shot glasses and fill them with blood. The reason you didn't just do eight to begin with is that after a while the blood starts to react (coagulation is just a part of it) and will not register correctly.
Make the mixture with double the amount of onion. If the blood remains red you are AB. Do it again using no onion at all. If it remains red You are AB +.
Now if you have used ground pepper rather than peppercorns you will need to get two more shot glasses of blood.
Again make the mixture but use half the garlic and salt but double the ground pepper. If remains red you are - if you were A or O
Do it again but use the normal amount of garlic. After 30 seconds add another amount of salt. If still stays red you are + if you were either B or AB.
This is a simple way of doing it at home and doesn't require that you go to a doctor or blood donation.

O- is the universal donor, due to being blood type O and negative Rh factor. We're the most picky recipients, only being able to receive O-

What do you mean if my method doesn't work ?
If he measures properly, follows the instructions, and is quick so the blood doesn't start reacting and going bad; it will work.
Try it yourself and match the result against your known blood type.
