Angels One Five (1952)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046714/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angels_One_Five

It feels more human and authentic compared to B o B that had parts that felt too flashy and special effects ridden.

Strangely I have never heard of this film until I came across it the other day on the net.

I haven't heard of it either. It's on Amazon, free for Prime members.
I'll be checking it out, thanks for the recommendation!

Some links on youtube under fake listings for it as well, but I never trust those.

How was Battle of Britain special effects "ridden"?

I'm puzzled by that statement.

yea same here, the only "special" effects in BOB were when things went boom on the ground or for blood, all the air to shots are 100% real!

Also check out the TV series about a spitfire squadron in France 1939 and in the Battle of Britain Piece of Cake Some excellent flying in it by Ray and Mark Hanna, they also did the flying sequences for the Battle of Britain film.

Also another older (1972) TV series about a Lancaster Pathfinder Squadron

Own "Piece Of Cake" on DVD, great series. I recall watching "Pathfinders" back in the day when it was new. Cool stuff.

BoB came out in 1969, there was tons of CGI in films by then!

I meant this movie has more human sides scenes than BoB that had too many battle scenes with planes exploding and crashing and with a huge all star cast, it only explored the human side of a few of the characters in that film.

The rest were just there to appear and disappear to be shot down.

And that's what's making it such a great aviation movie! It doesn't lose its focus on characters, love stories, and son on, but keeps on its track to show us air battles and strategies.

"Battle of Britain" centered on the historical campaign as it unfolded and it showed it via the portrayal of the air battles and German bombing campaign. IMHO, the film had plenty of scenes where character was explored where you had people in rooms having dialogue that provided both exposition and character motivations. This was by no means a Michael Bay film.

I would think Tora Tora Tora would be the biggest offender in that regard, all historical characters only doing what they did, little extraneous dialog.

They're all excellent movies. Plenty of room to find more. You still have to keep in mind the times they were made and how movies were treated then.
The only thing that bugs me in BoB is when Ian McShane goes back to see the church blown up. Sure, he looks dumbfounded and in disbelief, but almost more curious than upset.
I'd have loved to see a proper Deadwood style Swearengen rant instead.

When I went to see BoB in the cinema during it's first release we got a pack with maps, combat reports and histories of some of the people that fought during the Battle of Britain, for a 12 year old lad it was a treasure trove smile

Oh wow, I would have absolutely loved that as well!! That's very nice indeed. Do you still have the maps and combat reports?

I wonder if that was the first take and he was surprised at the set work. smile

Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.

BBC article : http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-34250794

The average age of a BoB pilot was 20.
