I've got DCS running on an external monitor from my laptop via HDMI.

When I pan around on the outside or the view changes quickly, I notice the picture doesnt stay as one, but I'll get three distinct sections.

I'm thinking it has to do with vsync, but I've got it turned on via the GUI. Is that still broken? Do I need to modify something else?

Thanks,
Jeff

That does sound like V-sync issue indeed. You can always fire up in-game fps counter (Ctrl+Pause) and check if the fps gets capped correctly.

Something I found by doing some searching:

I need to edit the graphics.cfg file, however that has been replaced by a autoexec.cfg file

However, this does not exist. So I'm back to square one. Why does ED make things difficult for us to fix on our own, when they wont?!?

What mode is the external screen operating on?
Is it expand view or mirror (same picture on both screens) ?

Do you have V-Sync on in the graphics card options?

The external monitor is set as to be the primary monitor so the laptop screen is closed/off. It's full screen, non windowed.

Having an issue with nVidia's Control Panel right now, so if I can get it to work, I'll double check that.

Thanks,
Jeff

I'd bought a new video card and had a bad tearing problem with it. So bad I returned it. The next card was no better, until I dropped the Options -> MSAA to 2x.

I'm using a GTX 680 with:
Textures High
High
High
High
High
Heat: On
High
1680x1050
16:10
1 Screen
512 (what they are in RL)
MSAA: 2x
Off

Clutter/Brushes 200
Trees 6000
Preload 100292
On are:
Tree Shadows
VSYNC
Cockpit Shadows

Thanks WC, I'll give that a try today. Weird, as this is a new card and I'd expect it to handle it. My older 4 year old card didnt have the issue.

Cheers,
Jeff

Well, over lunch I tried out your settings Crew. The exception being my screen resolution, although I did try yours. However, I still got the tearing when viewing outside the helo. Even the blades got weird looking.

I messed with MSAA completely off also, but it didnt help. So I'll live it with. Hard to believe that a brand new 965M would do this.

Thanks,
Jeff

Right click desktop -> Nvidia Control panel

Manage 3D settings -> Global settings

Vertical Sync = Set to On

Does this make a difference at all ?

My nVidia control panel wont even come up. That was my first place to check. Somehow, it's been corrupted. Probably with the latest driver install. It's happened before with their stuff. I'll just have to go through the process of removing everything nVidia and starting from scratch.

Then maybe tackle the problem at hand.

There is the problem your driver install is borked if you cannot get the control panel up

download latest nvidia drivers

then get this
http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

reboot PC in safe mode (use f8) if using windows 7

run driver uninstaller and after the reboot , try new drivers , do custom install tick the clean install option

see how you go

Ok, so I did all that. Control opens now, but no game settings are displayed. Just a tab about Stereotopic3D setup. Whatever... nVidia pfft

So I flew online tonight and the tearing was horrendous. And huge lag when I fired the rockets.

After logging out of the server, I disabled my external monitor and tried the Huey Free Flight mission. Viola', no tearing. So maybe I'm pushing the card higher than it can when displaying it to the monitor? The monitor's screen rez is the same as the laptop monitor's though.

And I've not seen anything like this in any other sims (P3D).

Weird.

I do appreciate all the assistance. You guys have been awesome.

Is it a dual graphics laptop with integrated graphics and the 965M also? Maybe the external monitor is running on the integrated instead of the dedicated 965M.
Did you check the FPS on the external monitor?

No, I had not done that. I did more reading this morning and the on-board graphics card/nVidia conflict was mentioned. I'll test that tonight and see. Additionally, I read that if my external monitor is attached, it may be the reason my control panel wont display anything but stereotopic3d setup, vs game settings.

So much for Plug & Play. But at least I know my vid card is ok. I've just got to find the conflict to the external monitor.

Well, back to square one. DCS doesnt like the external monitor, no matter the settings. I've tried running a lower res, I've adjusted vsync in and out of DCS. Nothing works when displaying on the second display.

Oh well, I'll just run it on the smaller 17in laptop display.

Are you on Win 10? See another new post in this forum.

Win 8.1 still due to the reported conflicts with nVidia drivers.

I'll check out that forum and see.

Thanks Crew,
Jeff

I was just flying and thought about that you are trying to get DCS onto a second monitor. I run DCS in Windowed/NOT Full Screen mode at a resolution just below my primary monitor rez. DCS always launches on the primary monitor, but because it is in Windowed mode I can drag it to my second monitor (but it won't fit just right).

I looked back in this thread,,, try turning off Full Screen (again?). Is DCS then running on your primary monitor Windowed and can you drag it over to the other one?

Thanks for keeping it in mind. I'll try out the windowed mode. Some further info, when I open the laptop (I keep it closed), it's screen will pop on and if I check the resolution screen, it will have defaulted to extended screens. So maybe that is something.

Again, thanks. We'll figure this out.

On a positive note, I was able to successfully (maybe not gracefully) takeoff in the TF-51 without ground looping it into the weeds.

Crew, you are the man!! That was it. I went back and extended the screens and pushed the primary to the external and in game, deselected the full screen option. Viola', no tearing.

Thank you for sticking with it.
