Wait, is this really controversial? Not much drama to a plane crash unless someone shot it down.
Scully: Victim died of multiple stab wounds. Mulder: *throws her a file* Ever heard of the knife alien?

At the very least it would answer the "landed in a valley hidden somewhere" conspiracies if it was shown to have crashed in the ocean. Of course, we may never find the impact point.

That's a big difference!
Is it possible for currents to carry debris that far away? You need to Google 'message in a bottle'.
There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

You can't really fake barnacles.

I find it weird that people are hailing this as valuable information... after months at sea it could have come from anywhere. It is quite a bit off from the last known position, yes.
And yes, it will at least stop the "stolen aircraft" conspiracies. Maybe. One source I read said that it could indeed provide valuable information, based on the types of barnacles found on the part. They said certain species were more likely to collect in the northern waters, and others in southern waters nearer Australia. This could provide clues as to which ocean currents may have carried the pieces, and based on the ages of the barnacles, how recently. No idea on the validity of that, myself. But who knows.
