Fiction or non, but I was wondering what life was like for carrier pilots on deployment. Preferably late 70's early 80's north atlantic, but I will take anything that describes the experience. I am looking for info along the lines of how often did they fly, how often was an armed CAP or alert flown/sitting on deck, response to Soviets (trawlers, recon planes, etc.) and what was done with downtime (spent in ready room, wardroom etc?). Thanks for any suggestions.

Get "The Sixth Battle" by Barrett Tillman. Superb fiction about a conflict between a US Carrier Battle Group and a Soviet group off South Africa in the nineties.

Cannot be bettered.

I used to have that somewhere. Haven't read it in at least 16 years though.

Ditto, I read that in the early 90s I believe.

You don't have to get it from amazon obviously!

It's a great read from a Brit POV. He also did a good one about the Vulcan bomber raid on Stanley airfield. (Vulcan 607)

Just bought this on the recommendations posted. Excellent read, and only a couple of pound. CheeRS for the heads up.

If you can find it: "Supercarrier" by George C Wilson.

The author went aboard the USS John F Kennedy in 1983 for a 7 month deployment. Read that book a few times as a kid with delusional daydreams about being a Tomcat pilot someday. biggrin

Focuses on life onboard the ship, and has stories about F-14's intercepting Bear bombers, and some airstrikes on Syria and Lebanon.

I'd actually love to read it again myself, but I don't believe there's a Kindle version.

I refuse to buy a flight sim that I have no interest in playing, on the off chance that MAYBE someday they'll make the one I really want to play.

I got a used copy for around $5. My kindle is super convenient, but for older stuff like this I don't mind having a physical book. Thanks for the suggestion!

I have "Feet Wet" by RADM Paul Gilchrist:

http://www.amazon.com/Paul-T.-Gillcrist/e/B000APQA5E/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1?qid=1440637813&sr=1-1

He was a Crusader pilot in Vietnam, CAG for the USS Saratoga in 1970, and then was in charge of the Pacific Air Forces in the early 1980's. Might be a good place to start.

If you've read any of the Jake Grafton novels by Stephen Coonts, they all take place from 1972 onward. I've only read the first three (chronologically speaking), but in "The Intruders" and "Final Flight," the alert flights and Bear intercept missions were definitely discussed.

"The Sixth Battle" is excellent reading.

For a historical perspective, "Air Power at Sea" by John Winton is pretty worthwhile as well.
