High over the Front
Beautiful May weather, blue skies and not a cloud in sight.
Flying my trusty Se5 I got into a scrap with two yellow tailed and nose V-strutters over the front. Gave them both a good burst on the head-on pass - especially the lead Alb - so I picked him as my target. He flew like a man possessed though dodging here and there so much so I figured there was no way his pal could keep up so I didn't bother to check my tail.
A mistake because not only did he keep up but hit me with a heck of a burst of Spandau that heavily damaged my engine. Dive for friendly territory and he shoots me again wounding me right above ground level.

Well finally make a forced landing and try to shut my engine off (even get the message) but she won't shut off.
I have read in books that this sometimes occurred in "real life" but I have never seen it in-game. One pilot had to run into a tree at his field after landing to stop his plane after a mid-air collision damaged his plane and/or engine.
Just curious: anyone ever not able to shut their engine off - presumably because of damage? Or is this one of those odd occurrences that will never repeat itself?

Duke, never experienced this Sir. Wasn´t it possible to shut down the engine by leaning it to cutoff? I usually kill my engine that way, use the "e" key only to start the engine...

Yes there are a couple of different ways.
Tried the "Shift + E" which is engine shut down, got the sim message but it kept running.
Tried two other things quickly, one being the battery/magneto, and I forget the other as I was kind of in a hurry.

The reason for the rush is that it has been reported here (more then once) if you sit on the ground (non-aerodrome) too long after a mission sometimes you die. Don't know how true that is, and I have never seen it because I try to quickly exit once on the ground; especially on this occasion as I was flying my 14 victory stud.

Sounds like a glitch, but not sure. Smart move that you quit the mission so not to take any chances that the plane catches fire and that's what I would have done, too.

Another thing you could have tried was to use Autopilot, although it probably would have been a long shot
....

*thinking* here I go again with my "autopilot" solution for every situation, Ugh!!

Duke, I've had the same thing happen to me and like you, I just ended the mission. I even began to doubt that "Shift + E" was the right key combination.

That does happen from time to time if you don't shut her down! (Your plane will burn up, but no visible flames so it is hard to catch.) Never had it happen after a shutdown though...

The older I get, the more I realize I don't need to be Han, Luke or Leia. I'm just happy to be rebel scum...
