http://www.nasa.gov/feature/nasa-s-new-horizons-on-track-for-pluto-flybyThe recovery from a July 4 anomaly that sent the New Horizons spacecraft into safe mode is proceeding according to plan, with the mission team preparing to return to normal science operations on time July 7.
Mission managers reported during a July 6 media teleconference that NASAs New Horizons spacecraft resumed operations on its main computer overnight. The sequence of commands for the Pluto flyby have now been uplinked to the spacecraft, and full, as planned science observations of Pluto, its moons and the solar winds will resume at 12:34 p.m. EDT July 7. The quick response to the weekend computer glitch assures that the mission remains on track to conduct the entire close flyby sequence as planned, including the July 14 flyby observations of Pluto. Were delighted with the New Horizons response to the anomaly, said Jim Green, NASAs director of planetary science. Now were eager to get back to the science and prepare for the payoff thats yet to come. The investigation into the anomaly that caused New Horizons to enter safe mode on July 4 has confirmed that the main computer was overloaded due to a timing conflict in the spacecraft command sequence. The computer was tasked with receiving a large command load at the same time it was engaged in compressing previous science data. The main computer responded precisely as it was programmed to do, by entering safe mode and switching to the backup computer. Thirty observations were lost during the three-day recovery period, representing less than one percent of the total science that the New Horizons team hoped to collect between July 4 and July 16. None of the missions most critical observations were affected. Theres no risk that this kind of anomaly could happen again before flyby, as no similar operations are planned for the remainder of the Pluto encounter. And it seems Pluto is Red: http://mic.com/articles/121869/pluto-red-planetWhat color is Pluto? If you search for the dwarf planet on Google, the overwhelming majority of images suggest that it's a sort of steely blue or gray color. But now, NASA's New Horizons spacecraft is closing in on it, and new, non-crappy images are revealing something completely different.
It's red. I guess it didn't like the demotion so now it's going to fight for the title of red planet!

I say it is made of frozen blood. So that's kind'a cool.
Would blood still be red at such cold temperatures?

That's straight up brown, not red.
As for safe mode, with new age UEFI it was less F8 and more 15 minutes of trying to figure out how the hell to get it to boot to anything other than the OS. Followed by lots of PC LOAD LETTER

Brown with a few red spots It's like calling Earth white because there's some clouds and frozen bits. When I see a red planet I demand to see the previously mentioned blood covered space-hell

Way back in 2005, NASA had a webpage in where you could add your name to a list that would be launched with the New Horizons probe, so that in a way, you would "arrive at Pluto" with the craft. I had forgotten all about it, it was so long ago. Heck...Facebook was a novelty at that time and Twitter was just an idea. The year Batman Begins, SW: Episode III and King Kong were in theaters. This links let's you check if you are among the 430,000 submitted names. http://pluto.jhuapl.edu/Mission/Communications/Search-Name.php
